Aonuma: Prepare for Zelda Surprise Next Year

Posted Wed, 18 Nov 2009 by James Newton

What secrets await?

What secrets await?

Zelda big boss sets up E3 revelation

For a few years now, Eiji Aonuma has been promising something of a reimagining of the Legend of Zelda series. Twilight Princess was touted as the last Zelda "as we know it", and now Mr Aonuma has spoken to the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine about some of the developments in the next title.

"It is something we used to talk about with Mr Miyamoto, and he and I agree that if we are following the same structure again and again, we might not be able to give long time Zelda fans a fresh surprise."

"So we have been trying something new in terms of the structure of the Wii version of the new Zelda game this time. I am really hopeful that people will be surprised with the changes we have implemented for this Wii version."

Admittedly it isn't much to go on at the moment, but Mr Aonuma said he hopes the game will be on show at E3 next year, stating "it is something we are hopeful will be surprising."

We already know that the title will offer full MotionPlus support for its swordfighting, but these comments sound more like an overhaul of the game's structure itself, going far beyond its control elements. Perhaps we could see more traditional RPG influences at work, or perhaps even co-operative gameplay for the first time since Four Swords Adventure?

If you want to know more about what Mr Aonuma has in store, the full interview will be published in next month's Official Nintendo Magazine, which isn't out until December 18th, although that's a damn sight nearer than E3 2010.

Zelda at E3 :D

Remember when they did that big awesome interactive forest at E3 with the animatronic Wolf Link for the announcement of Twilight Princess? Maybe they'll do something like that again ^^

First Miyamoto says the game will be very traditional, now they're overhauling the basic structure of the game. I hope these latest words are true. Zelda is due a change.

At least both Aonuma and Miyamoto admit now that using the same ALttP formula again and again won't bring Zelda any further.

Then again didn't Aonuma say that PH had a different structure compared to the other Zeldas?

We're gonna tell you about something new in the game in, like, a year. Great, what a revelation.
How is it that the mind of a gamer nerd hears "fresh suprise" as "traditional rpg elements". I don't see the correlation at all. Any further RPG elements would turn off a lot of people. I'm just saying, RPG's are not as popular as video game web sites would have you believe.

No no no please no boring RPG mumbo jumbo!

Co-op? Meh whatever...

Let the series go bak to its arcade roots, when one could start playing at the beginning without suffering a boring corny intro. Like ALTTP and the first one. And make it more open and less scripted woule be great too.

And please no more scavenger hunting! I hated to find the darn pearls in TP and the "treasures" in the sea!

The Legend of Zelda: Grand Theft Hyrule
or
The Legend of Zelda: No More Zoras
Lol, j/k.
Personally I'd rather not have a first-person adventure game or have Link "level up" in any way, shape, or form using tired RPG elements. The Elder Scrolls series has had that formula down pat for some time now. Many Nintendo franchises usually begin in or end up in space so I'm betting on "The Legend of Zelda: We're Running Out of Ideas so Hyrule is in Space."

roro44

20. roro44 United States 18 Nov 2009, 20:17 GMT

Co-op would be pretty sweet, if done right.
I had heard that the spirit next to Link is his sword, which fits, since it does have the same features and Link is never without his sword....
FPS(wordfighter?) would be so unZelda.
Just a crazy thought, but it would be cool if you beat the game, only to have to go back in time to really beat the game. One last thought: Link's horse should fly. That could really be amazing. Yes, I have lost my mind in anticipation.

My prediction - Zelda - "The Dark Mirror" (Darkest Zelda to date)
Open Cut Scene - Old lady lures Zelda away from guards. Zelda gets stabbed through the heart and the hag licks the blade. As she does, her body transforms into Zelda. Jump 20 years later. Queen Zelda has turned Hyrule into a fortress of doom. Darkness has swept the overworld and rumors of a treaty between her and Ganondorf have emerged. The world is upside down. Link, now in his 40's is married and has kids of his own. A farmer/fisherman by trade, only has faint memories of his glorious hero-hood of the past. Along with his son, Maize and Daughter, Labby, they are heading on their yearly journey to pay homage to Queen Zelda. As they approach and bow to offer their yearly gifts of rupies and grain, Queen Zelda sees and recognizes Link. She whispers into the guards ears and they grab both of Links children and take them away as Link yells and struggles for them. Link is thrown into the dungeon and his execution date has been set. As he sits in the dungeon, an old man with a long white beard recognizes Link and reveals the truth and that Link must first escape and go to the hidden graves of Hyrule. The man gives him a key and dissappears into the darkness. Link gets to the graves and finds a small stone with engraving that says , Here lays Princess Zelda. He can not believe his eyes. It starts to rain and thunder.. just then lightening strikes her grave stone. And emerges a large ghost of her. She starts to tell him about what happened over 20 years ago. ... anyone want to hear the ending?

ren

I know it's been done, but it'd still be pretty cool to have link end up in space somewhere. I could see it being first person though, unfortunately. I hope it really is something new and creative, though. Nintendo's pretty great about that, so I'm not really worried. Now we wait.

@Zyzzybalubah (that was hard...)
Exactly! Wind Waker is in my opinion one of the best Zelda games, just as good as OoT and LttP. I can't understand why so many people complained about it.

I just hope that this change they are talking about is something big, Zelda is getting so repetitive and I remember some time ago Miyamoto saying that the new game would not be much different.

Hurry up E3 2010!!!

If motion plus sword play is in, they'll need some sort of either first person, close over the shoulder, or see-thru body type view for it to work well.
It could just switch when you enter combat (z-targeting) and return to classic views when you're not.
Either way I just pray they don't incorperate any traditional RPG elements.
So long as Miyamoto is keeping a close eye on it, I feel re-assured

...but still very anxious :|

Good!! I think the Zelda format is getting stale now and it's time for a shake up.Twilight Princess bored the pants off me TBH. I hope in this new one that the world is far more organic and less structured than in previous titles.Something akin to Fallout 3 would be cool whereby you could tackle the story in many different ways and make important decisions that can alter the game world. Can't wait to here what they've come up with. I can't understand why people wouldn't want change,we may as well just keep playing OOT or ALTTP otherwise.

Sorry dude, It's getting boring now right :D.
I just think it's time to let us explore Hyrule or wherever at our own pace and feel more like a living world. To me TP was a step back in this regard.Sure the towns were full of people but you couldn't talk to half of them and the ones that did talk seemed to have no personality IMO. I think Majora's Mask was a step in the right direction and would like to at least see something along those lines :)

machu

54. Machu United Kingdom 19 Nov 2009, 18:36 GMT

Agreed. Totally. A living breathing world like Termina would rock! But I'm not sure how open-ended it could be, unless they arm you with all items from the start, so as to negate the whole 'get this, to open that' system. I really like that system though, in Zelda & Prime. Nuff speculation from me, as it's all wrong anyway. Roll on E3 huh!! :)

lightsamus

56. LightSamus Australia 19 Nov 2009, 23:01 GMT

@Luigi78 Majora's Mask - was F!@#ing amazing! One of my favorite Zelda games. It didn't need the Master Sword, and didn't need Ganon. But they hit the nail of originally on the head. It had true Zelda action and true Zelda side quests (Collecting fairy's in temples, all the masks, heart pieces).

I'm normally not too harsh but when it comes to my Zelda I am lol so if you're offended easily I'm quite sorry. First-person and/or RPG elements such as level raising would completely ruin the series.

Overhauling Zelda? It doesn't need a massive change, something easy that won't ruin Link at all could be jumping (even with rocks feather/cape) the game's difficultly and adventure could be upgraded if Link had the simple option to jump.

I'm already paranoid that MotionPlus will ruin Zelda. Try and think of Wii Sports Resort when you run around in the field slashing people down, sure it's fun - but it's not Zelda.

They changed Link to a righty for the wii in the idea that it wold make all the right-handers out there happier with the controls (the wiimote is usually placed in the Right hand), what about us lefties though? I loved having my hand preference in common with my silent hero. They should make his hand preference optional without mirroring the entire character/game.

When I first read this I was outraged. What crap is Nintendo going to do to LoZ I was thinking.

Then again, the article suggests possibly it being designed for two new consoles, or some sort of graphic enhancement such as High Definition. With that alone, I would be pleased. But NO FPS or RPG Zelda. That would just suck harder than something that sucks.

If it is enhanced graphics I hope it looks like Oblivion, only much better. That would be epic.

ok so here is my prediction what the new zelda on the wii is going to be. So ninty said they are going to change the formual from other games. so what i think is if anyone has played a zelda game it has always been the same formual for every game. you go to a dungeon, you find a new weapon and that defeats the boss and so on and so on. What i think ninty is going to do is do away with the weapons fetch quest and have you start the game off with every weapon and how they are going to do this is by having the person pictured in the poster as a magical wand or something and he can transfor into any form of weapon like a sword or bow and in this way you will start the game off with everything and it wont be a fetch quest but more like an epic quest that is story driven and that is why you havent seen link holding a sword in the poster, but instead ninty is hiding the fact that he is holding a wand or something that looks like a wiimote with motion plus. thats my prediction and lets see how i do. hmmmm? lol
