What a horrible idea, and one I feel confident must be nothing more than rumor. Why take a character from a series that has been an embarrassment throughout the 3D era and put him into the sequel to the game that reinvigorated the genre? Letting SEGA have the license for the Olympics games was bad enough.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind Sonic appearing in this game. I'd much rather have Sega and Nintendo working together on an adventure actually designed for both characters together, but Sonic in this game isn't SUCH a bad idea, to me at least. If Nintendo is allowing Sonic in a mariogame they are starting to go nuts, it's an extremely bad idea that I think Nintendo fans will quit staying loyal to their favourite consolemaker. Being innovative is one thing and is good when developers pushes their franschises into new challenging gaming ideas but an idea like this will destroy the mariogames completely.

If it happens, somebody working on the game must have had a REALLY great idea to make it fun/interesting. The problem is that Sonic has been run into the ground as a franchise (4 hasn't saved him yet). It's fine to put him in a compilation game where there are many third rate characters or has beens because we think of them as they were not how they are now.

On the other hand, maybe they are having fun with a BUNCH of cameos in this one. Maybe even playable. That would help.

yes, they are 3D Sonic games

Sonic would also need a complete re-imagining in order to look half-decent in 3D, something he's never really been given. Look at how much Mario was changed in the transition to 3D, giving him a toddler-like movement and proportions along with a particular cartoonish style. Sonic's 3D models have all been horribly bland attempts to basically just render something like the old sprites. He's simply not up to the standards of a Mario Galaxy game, unless he were completely rethought from the ground up, and I can't see Nintendo being allowed to do that with him.

I'm with Raylax and Yosher on this one. I highly doubt it's true, but if it is it could be quite awesome.

Fair, his proportions looks a bit different, but I've never seen him looking well-designed enough in 3D to envision him running around in Galaxy. I'm very biased, though, because even before the gameplay, the very look of Sonic's 3D games from the Gamecube era was an instant turn-off for me. I just don't like their visual style at all, and don't see it as compatible. Actually, I pretty much hate the artwork and design behind all of the Sonic-related characters, and thought that they looked absurd in the Olympic games as well. That's just me, I suppose.

I honestly wouldn't mind if Sonic was playable in Galaxy 2 but I really don't see it happening.

What would really have me foaming at the mouth would be an actual crossover game that incorporates each character's own gameplay styles as opposed to trying to fit one into the other's world.

I mean, maybe Eggman made a portal into the mushroom kingdom, bringing in his whole fleet and making an Alliance with Bowser. And Sonic (JUST Sonic) follows him through the portal and teams up with Mario to save little animals, Princess Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom, and find the Chaos Emeralds.

And at the end there will be a big battle with you as Super Sonic and Super Mario (haha, I made a funny!) fighting against Bowser's Castle merged with Eggman's flagship.

Well, Sega is certainly making an effort to try to bring Sonic back to his former glory. Sonic and Knuckles is finally coming to the VC, Sonic Classic Collection on the DS, Sonic 4 on WiiWare and now this(maybe). I wouldn't be too surprised if this actually does happen.

I certainly wouldn't boycott it under any circumstances, given how much I love Galaxy and am waiting for the sequel -- I might give a long sigh of disappointment when I reach these levels, though. That'll show 'em.

I highly doubt this is true, but if it is, I'll have to reconsider my decision not to get this game. That's right. I'm planning on NOT getting Galaxy 2 (hate the camera in the first game), but Sonic being a playable character could convince me to get it after all.

I really like the divided opinions here...it's pretty much one extreme or the other. As for me, but me in the "I don't want to see this happen" camp, but I know that if it were true that Nintendo's staff will make it work really well. Galaxy 2 is in capable hands. The idea of a Hedgehog suit is not too far-fetched.

At first I was like eww, but now that I've thought about it, it could be quite good.

It could have the fun of SA1&2 (they weren't polished at all though)

and the polsih of SMG (which wasn't much fun, it just had some excellent presentation).

@Dragoon: Actually, I've been thinking for a while that a 2D crossover could be cool. The levels could be designed so that you can approach them differently depending on whether you play as Mario or Sonic. So while Mario might not be able to do spin attacks or get through loop-de-loops, he can go down pipes, use items like fire flowers and maybe even lift enemies like in SMB2.

As for Galaxy 2, I think it'd nice to see Nintendo show Sega how to make Sonic work in 3D. As long as it doesn't just feel like an update of the spheres game from Sonic & Knuckles.

Sonic and Mario games are very very different. I hope it doesn't screw up the Mario Galaxy 2 game (if true). Still, if it works, it would be good. I hope Sonic is a side, cameo character in this not a main one. For his sake and Mario's!

I could see a cameo, but to make him playable, you'd need to either make sonic play like mario (what's the point) or incorporate a whole new game engine. Seems like too much work. This would be absurd. I'd prefer to see other great characters from Mario's universe who have never appeared in the plumber's major 3D platform series, such as Wario (excluding his appearance in SM64DS), Waluigi, Daisy or Donkey Kong.

This rumour is hard to believe, and even if it's true Nintendo will make sure that the quality of the game isn't compromised.
And the (possible) fact that Sonic enters there doesn't mean automatically that the game will lose quality.

@Stardust: They sourced it from NGamer, which is a reliable source of information - it's a UK-based independant gaming magazine with a large following, they're about as likely to post information they know is completely untrue as NL is. So, not very.

What's interesting to me is that everyone cites how bad recent Sonic games have been. I take it none of you have faith that the developers behind Mario Galaxy could take the character and make something good with him? Hmm.......I've been thinking. Remember the Crazy Gadget level in SA2 and Sonic was all using those gravity switches to get from one floating block to another?
