Masahiro Sakurai took a short break from posting daily Super Smash Bros. screens over the festive period, but has today made his triumphant return to the Miiverse Director's Room community.
We'll be resuming our weekly summary from next week, but it may interest you to know that Sakurai-san has used his first post of 2014 to show off a new trophy for the 3DS version of the game. Rather like with stages, some of these will be unique and specific to each platform's version of the game, with the first example for 3DS showing Saria from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.
We expect there'll be more trophies than most of us can even hope of collecting. Do you think you'll get them all, and are you glad that there'll be unique sets for each version?

That's not a half bad idea. With two unique sets, more trophies can be created overall without bloating any single game. I love collecting and seeing the trophies, so this is great in my book.
That is a fantastic idea. I was only planing on getting the Wii U version but if there are difference like this in both games I will most likely pick up both versions.
I really don't play these games for collecting trophies, but whatever I guess.
That's alright but will they make a feature in the games to transfer the trophies to each version?
that is great
Hmm... All these makes me want to ask whether the 3DS and Wii U versions can be bundled together.
No, wait. Scratch that. Whether it WILL be bundled together.
I'm to excited that I don't know what to type...
Now all the 3DS needs is a 3D printer accessory, well one can dream anyway
I will get both anyway!
I really hope they do a discounted bundle of both the 3DS and Wii U versions. Make it happen Nintendo!
Since I plan to get both versions anyway, the more distinctive they are the better. I'm hoping for some Hotel Dusk/Last Window trophies for the 3DS version =)
Neat.
Not surprising, given the much higher model quality the Wii U version can and will manage.
If you can TRADE trophies with a friend's 3DS over local Wi-Fi, that'll be even better.
I still have 20 or so left to collect in Brawl. I better get on it!
Sakurai! Just take all my money!!!
Bugger, I'm still trying to get everything in Kid Icarus!
Gotta catch, I mean, collect 'em all!
@taffy I need two more trophies to 100% it.
NICEEEE!!!
That's one of the things I was hoping for. This is gonna be GOOD.
(Although, sadly, I saw the whole "separate sets" thing coming a mile away.)
@Kawaii_Neko how about a Megaman legends 3 trophy? TROLOLOLOLOL kill me now please.
I will get all the trophies.
Could this possibly mean less content on the 3DS and more on the Wii U?
@Undead_terror I was gonna ask that myself!
@Garo That would be brilliant. Now you are making me want to replay last window.
Ugh, this gives me more reasons to buy the TWO versions of Smash, on Wii U and 3DS. Looks like they are not going to be just clones of each other but rather two different versions with totally different stages/collectibles and who knows what else. This is awesome
I still don't get why there is not a native trophy support on Wii U or 3DS like psn for example. I see from the comments that I am not the only one that wanted them although they are not really a selling point, more a welcome addition.
I think this gives Sakurai and the devs an unnecessary source of extra work.
I was glad to here this about the trophies, mainly because if you have a 3DS, you would want characters from the games you have played on the system.
And Sakurai actually commented on the miiverse post, he said they are still beefing the games up and to stay tuned. And also, that talk about it still being released some time in 2014
Jeez. I'm still missing 20 some from the 544 in Brawl. 'Course, those trophies have requirements of the toughest of the tough...
Thats sort of annoying but cool at the same time... lol as in i like how in Brawl we saw some DS game charicters remade for the trophys in far bettee gfx i was hopeing to see some 3DS game charocters in WiiU gfx.. oh well atlest it means there will be more... i hope... lol
What do trophies do?
@belmont That is the last thing I really want to see Nintendo resort to. Achievements and Trophies are nothing more than preying on the OCD of gamers. They make games last longer by having a player do ridiculous things that they would not otherwise do just to "complete" the game, and serve no purpose other than to virtually pat yourself on the back and prevent you from feeling cheated that your $60 game only lasted 6 hours.
I say that as someone that chased and racked up 88410 gamerscore on the 360 before selling it, and now realize how silly it was. It was a joy and a relief to play a game just to play it and be able to walk away when the game satisfied me without feeling guilty that I had not done some arbitrary task like "play 1,000 online games (with the guy that sings into the mic and the five year old that shouldn't be playing it)". Not to mention the frustration of broken, disabled, or unobtainable achievements because a developer couldn't be bothered to fix the game or run their server for more than six months.
Tharja Super Smash Bros 4 trophy.
Pleeaseee.
Is it Just me, or the 3DS Trophies don't have outlines?
I realize this is to try to differentiate and get people to purchase both games, but I'd like them to focus on working on things that actually effect the game.
@FishieFish
@SilentHunter382 They'll both have different stages, with the 3DS version focusing on handheld game themed stages.
@Darknyht
@PokeNas
Account linked trophies/achievements are not inherently bad, it depends on how they are done.
Stuff like accumulating achievement scores for a leader boards (undoubtedly a tactic to try to get people to purchase lots of games and rack up achievements) or "do X Y times" achievements I think are stupid, but achievements for stuff like completing a game on a certain difficulty and having it visible on your account are fine I think.
@Darknyht good thing about Nintendo games is that they already have high replayability without the need for trophies or achievements. This is just icing on the cake for those who like this sort of stuff. As long obtaining these trophies aren't as stupid or banal as some games on Xbox (e.g. Getting points for completing something in game that you have to complete to progress anyways) then I'm fine with it. Though I feel ya. I'm not a trophy chaser myself (I have less than a 9000 gamerscore in all the time I've owned my XBox 360)
I think they should remove the trophies from Smash Bros and add them to the core 3DS system. Just as the puzzles in Mii Plaza, some kind of mechanics where you can trade or find new trophies (first & third parties) via StreetPass, SpotPass, etc.
@MF_MaxiMillion I wouldn't say less content on the 3DS as I'm sure they'll try to pack as much in there as they can but I'm pretty sure there will MORE content in the Wii U version of the game.
EDIT: "in the Wii U version" not "on the Wii U version"
Would be cool if this meant Assist Trophies too.
I'll add this to the list of reasons for why I'm getting both, also hoping for a bundle with both versions to be released.
There should be Trophy's for all games on wiiu and 3ds and be on your profile gamer tag like other consoles it would give people more to play for and makes games last longer.
@DarkKirby
DDDDAYUM
That's cool, I was wondering how they'd handle Trophies this time around. Hopefully I'll still be able to get both versions!
Good. It won't feel like i'm playing the exact same thing twice.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Ok now I am nearly considering getting both.
Sounds great to me. The only downside is that trophies on the 3ds won't look as good, therefore I hope the best trophies make it on the wii u!
Also, wow, can't wait to see those things in stunning hd display. And on the 3ds they will be in 3D!
Already was getting both versions, but this stuff only makes me keep that decision more and more as the release closes in.
@Mizore
Nope. Assist Trophies are like fighters, so...
@DarkKirby I seen that before, it's so sexy.
@SilentHunter382 They'll both connect to each other as well, it's rumored the 3DS version will have some sort of level up thing which you can use when you connect it to the Wii U.
But hey, we all know Sakurai by now. He'll pack these games with soooooo much stuff just like Melee, Brawl and even Kid Icarus Uprising. XD
All Wii U/3DS games should have trophies. I suggested a while ago that Nintendo should have medals, that could be selected by users to put around their Miis. This would distinguish Nintendo's Medals from Xbox's achievements & Sony's Trophies. As you select a Mii on the town square screen, you can then see each Mii's medal collection. Medals would be bronze, silver & Gold. If a user collects all medals for a game, they get Triforce reward to show off. Get on it Nintendo!!
Any attempt to persuade me to buy both will be futile. Just ensure the 3DS ver is up to par, pls.
@belmont As @Darknyht explained - They are inherently evil and should be avoided at all cost. Think of the
children!OCD gamers!@TonyBoySP Good idea. They should remove all the Mii/puzzle stuff and have a forever updating character database instead.
Trophies aren't a big enough incentive for me to get both versions. Still going to stick to the Wii U one.
@JQuest
Nintendo needs a unified trophy system, period. Much like online gaming, they are way late to the party. The customer wants it & is used to it...I do no understand their insistence on not doing this. I love Nintendo, but this ommitence is truly bizarre. Trophies are the new high scores...they had scores in their 80s games, this would simply update that feature.
@Reala I agree it would be nice to have a 3D Printer for 3DS and Wii U so we could print off these Trophies.
@Luna-Harmony
We are of the same mind. Nintendo is notoriously stubborn to enact change...which can be a good & bad thing. In this instance, it's a head scratcher...you don't like or care for Trophies, fine, don't look at them...but the rest of us who do, would like to! Enacting system wide unified trophies should be a no brainer...then again, so should N64 games on the virtual console...yet, where are they??!!
I guess this is ok, but why would you not use trophies you already made in the wii u version, which will hopefully have many more trophies than the 3ds version.
Yes if a game comes out on both Wii u & ps3 i get the PS3 game just because it has trophies and shows on my gamer card.
I love nintendo but Trophy's for all games and on gamer cards would be really great they keep gamers playing and help you get the most out of a game.
Also people look at each others gamer card to get an idea of how good or new another gamer is.
awesome i hope the 3ds version has trophies from past 3s games like maybe resident evil the mercenaries 3d or revelations but its just a thought im just worried that the 3ds version will have less trophies than its console brother.i wonder if smash bros will have dlc that would be a nice touch.
It's a great idea. Each title has its own distinct look and feel even though its the new Smash Bros title Nintendo has been working on. Now, they even have their own set of unique trophies. I like it.
@midnafanboy
that would be cool......it can extend the replay-ability and tide everyone over until the next Smash Bros game comes out.
I'm saving +100$ aside for Both Wii U and 3DS versions v .......Wait...dammit.. I promised to give the 3DS version to my little brother.....
AFTER I PLAY IT FOR A WHILE HAHAHAH
Makes perfect sense! Hopefully there will be a lot of trophy's for us to collect in both versions! And stickers too!
@Agent721 I'm not down on a trophy system. I think you missed the part when I said that Nintendo games are high in replayablity without trophies, but it's icing on the cake for those who do...
I totally respect the fact that there are people who want it and they shouldn't be denied or left out, I also said that while I'm not a trophy chaser, I think a system like this would be fine as long as it's not banal like games on the other systems where they hand out trophies for things you need to do progress in the first place. I would be more apt to go after trophies or points if that was the case. The problem I have with system wide achievements as they are now is that every time I finish a chapter of a game, I don't need a notification saying I unlocked an achievement for doing what I was supposed to be doing. I don't need 25G for finishing the first quarter of Madden 25 LOL. Though I fault developers for that, not necessarily Microsoft or Sony. (However they could help out by having guidelines on what conditions you need to meet to obtain trophies/gamerpoints)
I can't remember if it was on here, or somewhere else, but I was having a discussion with someone (I almost feel like it was with you) about a network-wide trophy systems, and I thought it would be pretty cool for Nintendo to have one, because if they did it, they would probably implement it in their own special way. I actually had a few ideas about that myself. It was sort of like the way you described it in one of your posts on this article. To add to that, another part of my idea was that the trophies or medals would reflect achievement made. Like for instance, in a Mario game, there there could be a particular medal that's a coin, mushroom or some other power-up based on the achievement met. Also, in the Mii Square, it always shows what community you're in based on the last game you played. It would be cool if you clicked on a certain Mii and it showed them wearing/holding the last medal/trophy won. To go further, with Miiverse integration, it's perfect for sharing and exchanging tips on how a particular person won a medal, especially if it was a rare or hard one to obtain. Heck they could even implement special trophies that can only be unlocked if you worked and played together with people in your friend's list. Maybe even have some sort of trading system! So I'm not against achievements, I just want them to be more interesting overall. LOL
Good to know. I'm willing to bet that the Wii U version will come out first (as to not have the 3ds version draw attention from away from Wii U sales)
awsome trophies
@JQuest
I jumped the gun, we're on the same page. I like your ideas on how to integrate that into mii verse & the plaza. Hopefully Nintendo will do something, in their own special way as you say. They're just so slow to adopt change, I'm not holding my breath!!
In don't care much about trophies. Just give me a competitive link for Petes sake Sakurai San!
