Mario Kart 8's new DLC is a beautiful thing, offering additional characters, karts and tracks which breathe new life into what was already one of the best Wii U games. However, one of the highlights for the Nintendo Life team — all card-carrying F-Zero fans — is the Mute City track, which makes us want a sequel more than ever.
Rather than following suit and crossing their fingers for a new F-Zero, YouTube user Uchiha Madao has taken a step backwards by recreating the Mario Kart 8 Mute City in the N64 title F-Zero X using the 64DD Expansion Kit version's track building mode. So it's the future imitating the past on past hardware. Confused? Yes, we are too.
Speaking about the track, Madao noted that it's not quite a straight replication:
It was pretty fun and odd rebuilding this track because just last year i never thought I'd be rebuilding a Mute City track that didn't come from an F-Zero game. This track turned out pretty well but I had to tweak some parts because FZX's physics are more dangerous (the part where the cylinder joins the track is upside down and that is insta-death in FZX normally).
Check out the footage below and tell us what you think about this insanely amazing piece of retro-customisation.

That. Is. Amazing.
That is amazing indeed.
That is OK.
All this did is make me yearn for a release of FZX on the Wii U VC, upscaled and everything.
What impresses me is how damn good this guy is at F-Zero.
@Liam_Doolan agreed lol
Looks so much more fun than the MK8 track.
I was under the impression the "Mario Kart 8 - F-ZERO Curse" was basically "Mute City - Twist Road" from F-ZERO GX (GameCube).
If I am right, then he has just remade a GX Course, which is what MK8 has done.
@AK-1138 Don't expect any upscaling. It's VC after all. Not a remake service.
And now that MK8 track will never be as fun again.
It makes a pretty good F-Zero track surprisingly.
Wow, seems better than the MK8 version.
Would love an eshop MK8 64 release.
So Nintendo, about the future of F-Zero... better get busy!
Im downloading Fzero X on virtual console right now
Confession, I never played any F-Zero game outside the original and the first GBA one.
I have GX but it's sealed and I just can't do it!
@Liam_Doolan Well said, bet he beat all of the Staff Ghosts on Time Trial. I managed all but 2.
How amazing would an HD F-Zero with 30 player online races, and death races (as in F-ZX) be? Come on Nintendo/Sega, you know it makes sense!
Nice work! Totally recognized the track layout but of course it goes faster in the original game.
Makes me wish Mario Kart had a 1500CC option
And here's the key point...
This GENUINELY looks far more fun than it's equivalent in Mario Kart 8, despite the huge graphical difference and whatever other additions in Mario Kart 8 etc, and that just makes me wanted a properly realised current-gen F-Zero game even more.
Why can't I get a new F-Zero that captures the magic of this game?!
This guy has some serious skills. I don't think I ever learned how to corner like that when I was super into the game.
Everyone always harks on about GX, but F Zero X is my favourite in the series.
I would love to see Nintendo release F-Zero X on the VC with a few minor updates.
They should add the 64DD content and make it so that we can swap tracks online.
I forgot how insane that game can be on some tracks. This one was nuts, and forces me to admit that I would probably never be able to finish a lap, never mind the race
Makes me feel sad how slow Mario Kart 8 is.
@SpookyMeths I lol'd
The concept of FZero is great, but I never had a Nintendo as a kid so have never got to grips with how the love you go round even a mild bend without slowing right down or bouncing around like a toddler on water-skis. Still want a Wii U version tho, obvs.
@FX102A If you have a Wii or Wii U, you can do the same as @vonseux and download F-Zero X from the Wii Shop Channel for 1000 Wii Points (eshop cards can be redeemed there and are converted to points). Provided you have a classic controller or classic controller pro that is.
The big question is why this game makes the track look far more fun...
Wow, it looks really hard to run.
Impressive skills, also nice to know someone still uses the old 64DD.
An HD remake of X on Wii U with the added 64DD content would be so awesome.
That Mario Kart F-Zero track reminded me how much I want an F-Zero game foe Wii-U. Come on Nintendo, tell us it's in development already!
Nintendo should put this on the Wii U VC.
