While the number of Wii U ports Nintendo has bought to Switch might be a bone of contention for some fans - especially the ones that stuck with the company through those lean years and already bought these games once before - it's easy to see why they make sense. Not only do these gems find a new audience who are either coming to Nintendo hardware for the first time or who simply skipped the last generation, but their sales work wonders with Nintendo's balance sheet.
The latest Japanese figures for the week ending 17th February show that New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe has sold a whopping 431,771 physical copies since launching in Japan, with nearly 34,541 of those coming last week, putting it at number three on the all-formats chart. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was keeping it company at number four, too, having sold a tidy 29,843 units itself.
Also freshly released are the NPD figures for the top 20 best-selling games in January 2019 in the US. Guess what's sitting in third place just under Kingdom Hearts III and the remake of Resident Evil 2:
While there are no figures attached to that number, the fact that NSMBUD is beating the Battle Royale juggernaut of Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is mightily impressive for a game that released in a very similar form back in 2012.
NSMBUD still has a way to go to catch up with Smash's 2,860,986 lifetime Japanese sales, but just looking at those hard numbers is more than enough to understand why all of these Deluxe versions are coming to Switch - and we're sure we haven't seen the last of them.
With the ports likely to arrive whether you want 'em or not, which ones would you fancy seeing again in Deluxe form on Switch? Feel free to discuss the pros and (joy)cons below.

bring Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII on the Switch!
Its nice that ports are selling well. Sometimes Mario feels like you playing the same game over and over again
I don't mind the ports, makes me laugh how people get extremely upset by them as if Nintendo is pointing a gun at their heads making them buy it again
So far I've double dipped with this and Mario Kart and also picked up a few others that I didn't buy for the Wii U for one reason or another. (Donkey Kong and lego city)
One game I probably won't bother with if it happens is Super Mario 3D world. I did enjoy but don't feel the need to go through it again.
Lets just be real here. We all completly expected this.
Animal Crossing New Leaf Welcome Amiibo U Deluxe Festival OMG edition. 😆
@Marios-love-child it's disappointing because most of us here played these games on Wii U 5+years ago and yet Nintendo is diverting it's limited resources to re-releasing these same games. Resources that could instead be spent on something new.
Hey, where’s the full chart @nintendolife? And the hardware figures? I enjoy them every Wednesday. I hope we get a separate NPD article too please!
Created an account just to ask for a ban on “blimmin’“, “ruddy” and “heck”, @nintendolife. All funny once, maybe twice, but it’s time to move on from the quaint bowdlerisation.
@Mogster
Same here. I get some ports like Mario Kart 8 but just remaking everything is lazy.
@Mogster you have to be joking right. The resources used for these ports is bare minimum. The idea that this is stopping new games being developed is laughable.
And it's been said so many times before. These ports are brand new games for lots of switch owners. Nintendo as a business would be damn right silly if they listened to the few moaners and decided not to release these Wii U ports.
Also proves how salty people get over games they are not at all legally required to buy.
I'd like Mario 3D world, Nintendoland, Yoshi's Wooley World, Wind Waker 60fps, Twilight Princess 60fps, Pushmo World, Kirby and the magic brush or whatever it's called on Wii U, Paper Mario color splash, Wonderful 101, Starfox zero (and the defence game connected to it), Mirage Sessions FE at 60 fps, Wii Party U (I think it's this game that has a fun pole vaulting game in it), Tekken Tag Tournament Wii u deluxe Switch edition, and Soul Calibur 2 please!
@Mogster
Or you could look at it another way as some of these games were absolute gems and due to poor Wii U sales alot of people will have missed out on them so its great that they're finding a new audience.
I don't think it's fair that Nintendo charges full price for them to be fair (that's a different argument of course) but as I pointed out in my first post... Nobody is forcing anybody to buy them again
Oh my God, I forgot the game I want most from the Wii U library-- Pikmin 3! All the Pikmin games are great, but 3 is the best. I would love for it to have a low resolution mode that runs at 60 fps just like Fire Emblem Warriors. Would be incredible to play Pikmin at 60 frame per second in portable mode!
I don't get the salty ones either. I have many (but not all) of the Switch ports on my Wii U and have no issues with others experiencing some of the Wii U's excellent games. Besides, I doubt the Switch will get EVERY Wii U exclusive.
I'll also play devil's advocate for a sec; the ports that Nintendo has been shelling out over the last few months have given me some time to catch up on ye olde backlog.
More Wii U ports please!
Ports are great for those who haven’t played them and for those who have, a good chance to finish them on their Wii u
Ah, everyone does ports, no big deal.
Zelda Breath of the Wild is approaching its 2nd birthday and it is already ahead of Battlefield V in monthly sales
@Mogster
Luigi's Mansion 3, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Maker 2, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Party, Splatoon 2, Yoshì's Crafted World, Pokemon Let's Go, New Pokemon, Mario Tennis Aces, Kirby Star Allies, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors, Arms, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo Labo, AND...
Astral Chain, Bayonetta 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Daemon X Machina.
Yeah, let's ignore all of that! 🙄
@Mogster Per Nintendo's own website, New Super Mario U sold less than 6 million copies. Less than half of the WiiU owners. There is a huge market for that on the Switch and it's an easy turnaround. The two interns that spent a couple months working on it aren't slowing the production of Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion.
@CarpeDiem oh please. Stop the hyperbowl. You are acting like Nintendo haven't bothered bringing anything new to the table and instead it's just Wii U ports. Simply not true and you know it
These remakes are easy money but at the same time provide a solution for two issues: 1- the real demand it exist among those of us who skipped the WiiU and 2- the need enrich the console line up while the 1st and 2nd party development teams are working for this and next year blockbusters.
For the Nintendo loyal fanbase, 2018 was the year of indies, great 3rd party ports, Octopath and Smash. It was a hell of a year nonetheless!!
@KingdomHeartsFan You sound like the embodiment of NL comments sections. Sit down and hold this L.
There's probably more Switch owners who never owned a Wii U than Wii U owners who now own a Switch. They're not going to run out and buy a dead console just to play these games. To them it's a brand new game and Nintendo wants these people to see what they missed out on - the sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe says it all.
A small minority crying on comment sections aren't going to stop them bringing these titles out as they're not their major source of income - it costs them very little to port these games, they bring in a nice amount of cash (which they can put towards new games) and they recoup the original cost of development from back in the Wii U days. It's business.
@KingdomHeartsFan No new ideas? Breath of the Wild was almost a new IP with how much it changed LoZ. Mario Odyssey was no slacker either. Sushi Striker was... bizarre, but certainly new. ARMS you mentioned. We've got a new IP they're publishing just announced, Astral Chain, plus they're funding Daemon Ex Machina. 1-2 Switch was bad... but fresh and new. Labo was one of the most off the wall video game ideas of all time. Snipperclips was a very fresh take too.
Talk about ignoring half the games they've released on the system.
Here's my problem with the Wii U ports, as someone who bought the Wii U, and buys every new generation of Nintendo console or handheld: Those of us who did support Nintendo during the Wii U days may pay for the console's lack of success, by not seeing proper sequels to some games until the Switch's successor.
A lot of Nintendo's franchises see one entry per generation, like Mario Kart. We should be looking forward to Mario Kart 9 and New Super Mario Bros. Switch. However, since Nintendo didn't get the sales for Mario Kart 8 and NSMBU that it may've wanted due to Wii U's failures, now it's trying to get those sales from the Switch generation. And it's getting them. MK8 Deluxe and NSMBU Deluxe (for example) are selling like proverbial hotcakes. While it's getting great numbers from enhanced Wii U ports, what reason does it have to possibly cannibalize sales by putting out proper sequels anytime soon? So, it kind of feels like those who skipped Wii U are being allowed the chance to catch up, while those of us who remained loyal to Nintendo might be punished for Wii U's lack of success, by missing out on proper sequels for this generation.
Since MK8 Deluxe came out so early in the Switch's life, I guess there's a chance of seeing MK9 this generation. However, I don't see a proper 2D Mario followup coming until next generation, with NSMBU Deluxe & Super Mario Maker 2 out here in the Switch's 3rd year. The next 3D Zelda... I don't know if we'll see a proper 3D Zelda until Switch's successor, or not (I consider BotW a Wii U game), with the development time they take. I am relieved to see 2D Zelda live on, with the Link's Awakening remake. That was a concern of mine, with Nintendo integrating console & handheld with the Switch.
I know Nintendo doesn't "owe" anybody anything for loyalty, but it would be nice to get to see proper sequels for our beloved franchises each generation, regardless of how a generation's system performs. Good for those who are getting the chance to play these gems for the first time, but I do feel a little abandoned, as a loyal Nintendo supporter.
Aside from MK8D, and technically BOTW, this was the most no brainer decision for a port. This series has sold wonders on systems that had the one thing that the Wii U didn't, a large install base. It didn't drive people out in droves to buy a system on its own during the original release, but now that the Switch is a big hit that's still going, those people that bought it for something else (Smash, Zelda, Mario O, indie games, etc.) will gradually pick it up. It will probably be a very steady seller that will rank very high on the list of highest selling games on the system when the successor comes.
Sure, they could have made an all new title for the Switch, but this is a series where the biggest change over the course of thirteen years was when they added multiplayer. It would have essentially been the same game with minor differences. Why spend money and time to develop a totally new entry when they had one sitting there which most people had not played because they didn't get the system it was originally released on?
@WiltonRoots they have already recouped development costs on all these games. They sold enough on WiiU to do that and more. Nintendo has low costs to begin with.
Charging $60 for Super Mario U is gouging fans. Sony and Microsoft would too if they could, but there are too many great competing games. Nintendo knows they could put a turd in a box and some fanboys would pay $60 and thank Nintendo for allowing them to own a turd.
@Mogster “limited resources” hah, Nintendo is a large company, you do realize within large companies there are many different departments and employees who specialize in different areas right? To port a game requires only a few employees, who themselves were likely hired into Nintendo for that matter. Miyamoto himself doesn’t drop working on whatever big project to port a simple New Super Mario Bros game to Switch. I wish people would understand this.
This promotes more full price wiiu ports. Don’t know if this is good for the consumer or the company...
I don’t want too many but I would like to see Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Good for Nintendo. This is a fun game - I don't know if it's $60 fun, but it's a fun game. I don't mind a Wii U port here and there. They can release it, and I'll either buy it or I won't. I'd love a port of Star Fox Zero (on only one screen!), and I think Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE would work fine without a Gamepad.
@Marios-love-child
My issue is the lack of effort in most of these and the pricing. I wouldn't mind owning NSMBUD but it's a 7 year old game with the sub-standard NSLB packed in and an extra character...and it's being sold at full price. I'll bite if it was £30 perhaps but not at full price for something so lazily done and something I can buy for my Wii U for £10 used and it wont look that much worse either. Some significant new content would be a great incentive too.
Now compare it to what Microsoft did with Halo Collection...this is a five game collection featuring games that have been remastered properly...[removed] Microsoft are still supporting it! They gave it a free update so it can now be played in 4K. Hell, compare it to what Nintendo did themselves 26 years ago with Super Mario All-stars. The ported 3 NES titles and significantly upgraded them graphically and sound wise, and then added a Japanese only version of SMB2 on there which was also upgraded to the SNES standard Why couldn't Nintendo do a New Super Mario Bros All-Stars? Because that would have taken more effort, money and dev time to do! Nintendo has been really [removed] with doing "remastered" port jobs for a very long time. Metroid Prime Trilogy was a very rare thing indeed too.
@60frames-please that Kirby wiiu game would probably be really good on switch using the touch screen but that would mean portable only
For my fellow Wii U brothers and sisters who feel they are forgotten and feel angry that our beloved games are getting ported over to the Switch...
Don’t be angry! Don’t let that feeling creep up that all these Wii U skippers don’t deserve to play these wonderful games! Be proud that you bought the Wii U. Always remember that you helped keep Nintendo afloat during those lean years. Switch owners today can enjoy the games that YOU helped port over. Don’t fume! REJOICE!
@WOLF13 The thing is, is it really gouging if millions of people are buying it without batting an eyelid? I would imagine 9.999 out of 10 people who bought this game are completely unaware of the drama that is unfolding in videogame comment sections, they're happily bouncing around having fun in the Mushroom Kingdom without a care in the world.
Me personally? I don't give a damn as I'm not going to buy it, didn't even want it in the Wii U era.
@WOLF13 Exactly right. If Nintendo launches a lootbox game tomorrow (which they so far haven’t done but they’ve left the door open), the same people will trip over each other rushing to defend Nintendo (mere days after praising Nintendo for not making lootbox games). After all, nobody is forced to buy lootboxes and all of the other companies do it too.
@EvilRegal I agree. My kids and I stuck with Nintendo through what some call the rough Wii U years. To be honest I loved those years and so did my kids. Wii U brought about a lot of amazing games which is why Nintendo is able to port all of these hidden gems over and people are snatching them up on Switch. I think I would be a lot happier as a loyal Nintendo supporter if playing them on Switch would have lived up to the hype. As of now I had more fun with these games when I could post on Miiverse and share with friends. Now I get the same games again which are getting a little stale for me now and some features are missing other than adding portability and a few little things.
@WiltonRoots I don’t think the number of people buying means it’s not taking advantage of fans. A lot of people buy popcorn at the movies too.
And yes, consumers allow this. If they would wait, the price would drop.
@hadrian
For what's its worth I do agree with you on the pricing side of things. I did say as much in an separate reply to someone else
Again, a lot of complaining for something no one is forced to buy. I enjoyed NSMB on the Wii U. I'm glad others who didn't have a Wii U, but have a Switch will get to enjoy it. I personally won't be buying it. But that's because I'm not really invested in that series enough to double dip at any price. And I highly doubt these are taking any resources away from any sequels. For all we know, many of these games may have sequels in development with these ports to tide us over
Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4) and AceCombat (PC) were my buys on that list (Both are great - AC is also fun online).
After $120 in the hole, was not spending another $60 for one more WiiU port on Switch. Do not buy yearly re-skin COD either 🙃
I think it's funny; the comments environment here is so full of people who decry the fact that Nintendo does not have the virtual console on the Switch and how they want to buy and own VC games rather than "rent" them from a service, and yet it's also full of people shouting garbage at Nintendo for porting games from previous consoles onto the Switch. I can only assume many people are simultaneously members of the same group...
@KingdomHeartsFan Alright, I'm not even gonna bother with the rest, agree to disagree, but without arguing the port label, how does BotW being a port have anything to do with the discussion of 'Games Released by Nintendo in the last few years'. That's when the Wii U version came out too.
@sandman89 Yeah, and there are portable only games, just very few, and it's hard to imagine a big first party Nintendo game being portable only. Also, it's possible they could come up with some way to play it docked, maybe a two player mode of some sort. I don't really know how that would work... Anyways, it would be awesome to be able to play it portably.
When you see Snipplerclips, Arms and Sushi Striker make very little headway but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and New Super Mario Bros Deluxe all sell well i cant really blame a company that exists to make money wanting to make money. We still have a good amount of new original games coming so whats the issue??
@60frames-please The entire purpose of Nintendoland was to showcase asymmetrical gameplay using the GamePad. There’s absolutely no way that game is getting ported To Switch.
@thesilverbrick The Donkey Kong game, F zero game, Balloon Kid trip game, and others could work. And ones that seem impossible could work, while being better with 2 or more Switches. Pacman vs is fun on Switch, so many of the Nintendoland games could work too. It would be great if they added more games to it too!
The freakout over Wii U ports has never made sense to me. The system has built a pretty robust library of exclusives, and multiplatform, releases so why not release games from a console that only 13 million people owned? It makes much more business sense than ignoring the entire Gamecube library (*ahem Nintendo).
Honestly, though, it's not like porting the previous generation's games is a Nintendo-only thing. I mean, PS4 got upscaled ports of GTA V, The Last of Us, Bioshocks1-Infinite, Arkham Asylum/City, Uncharted 1-3, God of War III, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, Bulletstorm, Darksiders II, etc.
Honestly, those who are complaining need to compile a list of Wii U ports versus original content. In two years, we've received Breath of the Wild (I'm not counting it as a port since it arrived day and date, therefore it's a multiplatform release), Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids, Xenoblade II, Mario Odyssey, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Kirby, Mario Tennis, Octopath, Smash Bros. Ultimate, Golf Story, Into the Breach, The Messenger, Pokemon Let's Go, Arms, Super Mario Party, Snipperclips, etc. That's a list that doesn't include the ports like Dark Souls, LA Noire, Doom, Wolfenstein, or the countless good to great indie games, or the retro ACA/Johnny Turbo/Sega Ages releases.
If it was up to me, I'd rather see the best of the Gamecube library upscaled and released, but that's just me. There's nothing wrong with Wii U releases, though.
All the people who complain about ports need to chill. While I am not the biggest fan of ports, many people did not have the Wii U. Also, they seem to be generating money for Nintendo, so why shouldn't they do ports!?!? Nintendo has come out with many new games and sequels. Also, there are plenty of quirky indie games you can get for cheap. It is not like your favorite game did not come out because they were porting a Mario Bros game.
@KingdomHeartsFan Yeah, but... again BotW came out less than 2 years ago on both the Wii U and the Switch. That's still part of the Switch years.
Would have loved a super mario galaxy 1 and 2 port but actually plugged in my old wii again to tv and planning to take a trip to cex to swap swbf2 and Titanfall 2 (plus 2 quid) to pick them up. We keep talking about wii u ports but why there is not a version of Wii sports for switch blows my mind. The first thing I did when I put the Wii back on was to put on Wii fit plus and get some batteries back in the board. My daughter and mrs loved it straight away. Other than Mario kart, no other gaming series appeals to non-gamers and a whole new demographic like Wii sports/sports resort/fit plus.
I'd like Xenoblade Chronicles X, The Wonderful 101 and Super Mario 3D World on Switch. I skipped the Wii U, so those would be new experiences to me.
Also perhaps a Nintendo Land sequel with more mini-games, plus online play.
@60frames-please Porting three of those mini games and passing it off as a full port of Nintendoland would be terrible, especially considering the best games (Mario Chase and the Luigi’s Mansion ones) aren’t possible without the GamePad. They would be better off making a full sequel with completely new games. Porting Nintendoland as we know it to Switch is so unfeasible it might as well be impossible. Nintendo isn’t going to market a tech demo like Nintendoland as a full game and require more than one console to play it. How many households own more than one Switch? Talk about a minuscule player base.
I bought it, and I'm enjoying it. I can understand that some WiiU owners may be sour about these ports, but I also submit that there are far more people now owning a Switch that haven't played these game. And the more people buying products means more consumer interest, which can lead to more investment in new products.
The whole "limited resources" or "it will make Nintendo lazy" thing is silly. Did the Super Mario 64DS prevent future Mario games? Or OoT/MM 3D prevent future Zelda titles?
Didn't have a WiiU during its active life, I was busy playing video games somewhere else. My only loyalty is to my enjoyment. Once the retail transaction has taken place, I don't expect anything more than my product. That makes life much less complicated.
@KingdomHeartsFan I don't know the answer to that as that is a very personal and subjective thing. I can only say that I had no problem double dipping on MK8. There are a handful of third party game and indie games that are I think are worth checking out to fill in the blanks. But again, its a personal thing and what maybe worthwhile to some might not be for others. I also don't want to sound completely dismissive of people's concerns. On a certain level, I can understand the frustration
@KingdomHeartsFan
I think @MrBlacky answered your main gripe at #25.
@60frames-please Pikmin3 yes please!
@misterMike Switch hardware sales went up though I believe! I personally enjoy the article and information anyway
@MJInnocent Yeah, and honestly I'd play Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch. They're all great games. They need to get these out before releasing Pikmin 4 into the wild!
@thesilverbrick Maybe one person could be on a cell phone?! Like Jack box games, but a Nintendo action game. I know I'm way out on a flimsy limb here...

@KingdomHeartsFan
Sounds like their damned either way then. If they produce sequels to the classic that people want and help others to make new stuff and publish these games then it’s never enough for some people.
@dimi I think the issue some had with NSMB:U was that they reused tons of assets from the other 3 games in the same line, Mario Maker is the new 2D series going forward, and while it graphically borrows from all the previous core titles it is a great platform for the 2D series. There will also be DLC and additions over time like the first game had with the sequels, but my one hope is that there is a world editor so that I can finally make a full interconnected world and Bizzaro versions of beloved levels. Hell I remade a bunch of levels in the first game that got tons of stars with added secrets and what not.
People prioritizing ports? Puh-lease. Pardon the patronizing, but a portly plumber port only partly placates this person.
Surely Mario Kart 8 is the poster boy for Wii U games?
Also I'm pretty sure Black Ops 4 has easily outsold both releases Mario Bros U combined so let's not get too excited. In fact even just comparing it to other Mario games on the Switch its is very far behind in its sales trajectory so I have to applaud the spin you have put on this. Overall it's a rather mediocre entry and I expect well get more Wii U games and actually hope we get the likes of Mario 3D World which I'd expect to sell better than this
Yeah, ports dont really affect new games at all... We're still getting Maker 2 despite NSMBUD coming out. Look at the sales between Switch and Wii U versions of these games, the Switch versions always come out on top, even after being on the market for way less time. It's like people have this revisionist history where the Wii U sold really, really well. shrugs
What makes it even more laughable is the same folks will bemoan Wii U ports, but want N64 and GCN ports. 😏
@Marios-love-child 3D World is exactly the port I think they'll release next
@misterMike thanks
@KingdomHeartsFan If you wanna see what a Furukawa led Nintendo is producing, you may wait a while and need to be patient given he hasn't even been in the job for a year yet, and games just dont grow on trees.
@KingdomHeartsFan E3 2020 buddy. Recommend hopping on that PS5.
Why are people really still questioning this? Most people didn't have a Wii U. So for most people these are new games, or at least games they didn't get to play.
And the Switch is a better system on almost all fronts, so many people are okay with double dipped on top of all those people who never owned a Wii U.
@60frames-please I’ve never played the first two Pikmin! I have a cousin who loves them. My son and I absolutely love Pikmin 3 and I would definitely buy it for Switch. I was really hoping for some Pikmin news in the recent Direct! All I good time...
@Robrain I'd say take it a step further and add a "thumbs down" on articles themselves to help provide feedback that we really don't enjoy all the rumors and clickbait articles.
@KingdomHeartsFan or do Switch owners just not want new ideas?? Because with the exception of Splatoon I'd say fans are happy to mostly keep revisiting classic formulas.
Lesson #1 The world doesn’t revolve around you.
Lesson #2 Majority of everyone on all consoles loves ports
Lesson #3 Most people love NSMBU
Lesson #4 N-Life is an echo chamber of vocal minority opinion
Ports sell because good games sell, whether they’re ports or not. And they especially sell well when there’s added value not previously available (like upgraded resolution or framerate or better yet, in the case of Switch, an HD hybrid handheld console version and local 2D Mario multiplayer on the spot which cannot be overstated). That’s true on every console, Switch included. And New Super Mario Bros U is an excellent video game. Just because you repeat a lie over and over doesn’t make it true. Some are under the delusion NSMBU is a bad game because of the perpetual circlejerk that’s been going on among the vocal minority, when it’s actually one of the best 2D platformers ever created. You could accuse it of having generic and safe world themes. Sure. You could accuse it of being similar to the other games in the series. That’s also a fair statement. But given the fact they released them across 4 different platforms over the entirety of a decade spanning multiple console generations, that’s not really a problem. Unless you’re running a NSMB marathon with back to back to back to back playthroughs of 4 different games on 4 different platforms, most people aren’t going to care. The game has it where it counts. It’s gorgeous, crisp, with wholesome appeal and top-shelf precision mechanics, one of the best power ups in a 2D Mario game to date (love that acorn suit), jam packed with content (like 150+ levels?) and some really creative additions like the balloon baby yoshis and light switch baby yoshis, Picasso level and secret exits littered throughout, with some A-grade multiplayer options. It’s fantastic.
And since it’s been 7 years since the game released, it’s not like the game or the series is being milked. We haven’t even seen a proper 2D Mario in the better part of a decade.
The Switch is getting way too many ports of games people played 5 years ago. I'm more than down with a good remake, but the endless waves of low effort ports needs to stop. But the ports seem to be selling so I guess I'm in the minority in regards to thinking all these ports are kinda lame.
@KingdomHeartsFan @Sandro89 @Mogster
I know I'm late to the party, but I'd like to chime in.
I bought a Wii U on launch day and I bought almost EVERY SINGLE AAA game on that system. They are AWESOME games, and I dumped a lot of time and money into it.
That being said, I'm one of the people begging Nintendo to port more Wii U games. I sold my Wii U to help finance my Switch addiction and I want to play more Xenoblade X & Wonderful 101 and I'd be more than happy to pay $60 each.
Yes they're selling a 5 year old game for $60, but that price is a discount compared to what I paid. I bought NSMBU for $60 and NSLU for $20 (I paid $80) I very much enjoyed the game and I am not up for paying $60 again, but if it ever makes Nintendo Selects I'd love to buy it for$20.
I loved DKC:TF on Wii U, but I'm hoping to buy it in the $30 price range on Switch so I didn't pull that trigger.
MK8 I bought in both systems and it was cheaper on Switch because it came up the DLC AND a legit multiplayer and you can now hold 2 items. (I bought 2 copies on Switch so that my wife and I and 2 of our kids can all 4 play online together) and I don't regret it.
If you're mad about the ports be mad at someone like me because I'm buying some of them and I'm begging for even more.
Don't be mad at Nintendo, believe it or not they're actually pumping out new games faster this gen then they ever did in Wii U.
@MJInnocent I enjoyed playing through the first Pikmin on GameCube with my nephew. It's such a complete, and not too long, experience. Would be great if they just bump it up to say 600p at 60fps for Switch! Pikmin 2 is good fun too, and introduced 2 player battles, which was cool. Any Pikmin on Switch would be heavenly.
@Marios-love-child
Well done ports can be good for business and keeping games alive.
But I still think its bad when a company do not offer some kind of backward support when possible.
Sure you can use a Wii U CD on a Switch, but the digital copies could get some support.
Unless there is at least a good 90% discount to digital Wii U owners I would see this as bad deal,
I had all the Nintendo systems before the Switch
I got the Wii U because of it backwards support.
I am skipping the Switch because of 0% backwards support.
There is no doubt that Switch is a good system, but they 0% backward support broke my trust in Nintendo.
I hope the next system will regain my trust
@Slitth
Backward compatible is a relatively new thing on nintendo consoles. Sure the Wii and Wii U had it with each previous console but prior to that it wasn't a thing.
You could never play N64 games on a game cube, or SNES games on an N64 etc.
The Switch is an entirely new console and obviously doesn't have the facility to have a disc placed inside it and if Nintendo offered a discount to to people who'd bought games digitally they'd be alienating the vast majority who buy physical games.
It's a nice idea but sometimes you just have to move on.. Look at the PS4 for example, it surprisingly has no backwards compatibility at all but doesn't seem to have done it any harm.
@Marios-love-child
The Game Boy series has Backward support.
True its not across the full series.
And most systems has a shift in game card/CD
Digital does not have the same problem as its just user rights stored on a username. The only limit is if the program can run on the system
@Slitth
I'm not disagreeing with you as such, but I bought my Switch to play Switch games, anything else it can do would simply be an added bonus.
Yes it would be nice if it were backward compatible but it certainly wouldn't put me off buying one just because it isn't.
It sounds like your cutting your nose off to spite your face just on principle. There are 100's of games for the Switch that aren't available on the Wii U.
Did you get a discount when upgrading all your VHS video collections to DVD out of interest? No I'll bet is the answer, and nobody would have forced you to upgrade them either, it's a choice at the end of the day.
@KryptoniteKrunch Yep you'd almost think by reading these posts that every Wii U game sold 13.5 million copies. Everyone had a copy of every game. People talking for everyone again, like they do as if we're one big collective who think, act and do everything the same. Dripping with delusion.
@Kriven yeah I’d be afraid I wouldn’t fully appreciate just how good the first two were as three was my first experience. I actually didn’t like it at first, gave it a go and then didn’t play it for a long time... tried it again and it just clicked. My son watched me play it and it was the first game he beat by himself, he just picked it up after watching me, he was about four! We have a real love for it.
@JaxonH one of my favourite quotes from Michael Jackson is, ‘if you hear a lie often enough, people start to believe it’ I know you weren’t quoting him but it reminded me of it and it’s very true, excellent point and excellent post.
Would just like to say what a fantastic time I am having playing through Pokemon let’s go pikachu. I love the changes made and wish they would go back to the less linear approach like this game has and the originals had. Only criticism I have is catching Pokémon with the joycon is very hit n miss.
@WiltonRoots
Yea, its funny seeing time and time again the common opinion on here being the minority.
@Marios-love-child
Getting a Switch primarily for playing Switch games is common sense.
But that also make the Switch only worth the games that are no it.
From a cost benefit point of view a Switch console done not add any benefit to my current game library.
So I have to start a new game library from scratch.
That in and of itself it self is not a bad thing, but that means that each time I look at the Switch I have to think it that one game worth the price of the Switch and the game?
And how does this compared to other games where I already own the system.
The same goes for the ports.
If I already own the game on one system, does the conveniently of owning a extra copy match the price?
And when we look at other media I often get extra service.
My Blu-ray player still plays DVDs
My Steam game comes with a PC and Mac version when available.
Not that is matter much, the Switch sales numbers show that players prefer gaming in the now, instead of looking back.
And it makes sense for Nintendo to follow that trend.
@Slitth
Just speaking on a personal level, for myself I'd say that Super Mario Odyssey alone was worth the price of the Switch.
Might sound like a ridiculous statement but I do love my Mario games, especially the 3D ones
@Marios-love-child
I love the Nintendo games I have too.
But right now I can get more more quality gaming time for the 299.00 Dollars for PC games than buying a Switch.
But that decision that neither right or wrong as we all have a own sets of criteria when judging a game.
And there is no denying there are some really good games on the Switch.
@hadrian Please mind your language!
Are people really that surprised by the success of NSMBU DX??
It is probably the least exciting port ever, but it's still a Mario sidescroller released on a very popular and highly engaged platform. Even if the Wii U and the original NSMBU had been hugely successful, this port would still have been a sucess.
If it weren't for the impending launch of Mario Maker, this would be an easy 15+ million seller.
@Mogster The Switch has currently sold more than 2x the Wii U. For every Switch owner that hsd a Wii U, there is at least one that did not have a Wii U.
