Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's latest star, Piranha Plant, is now available for all players as paid-for DLC on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
As you'll no doubt be aware, Piranha Plant joined Smash's roster earlier this week for all players who had purchased the game and registered it to their Nintendo accounts before 31st January. While it has always been known that the character would become available to all at some point in the future, specific details hadn't been shared until now.
If you head over to the eShop, a quick search for 'Piranha Plant' will find the DLC option waiting for you. Alternatively, it also appears on the page for the main game. You can download it right now for £4.49 / $4.99.
If you want to see Piranha Plant in action, make sure to check out our recent video - it looks like it could be a pretty serious challenger.
Did you claim Piranha Plant for free? Will you be paying for the character instead? Let us know in the comments.

Well that took long
Thank god, I never got my code.
So the music and stage that will be in each challenger pack is only worth $.99?
Definitely got him as part of the pre-order bonus.
You can really cheese some fights with PP's down special. I was able to clear two legendary spirits on the spirit board with him (it?) just using that move alone. xD
@Optimusultimus Don't think you need a code. I thought if you purchased digitally it was automatically added and if you purchased physical then you just had to redeem your points before 31st January.
That's cool for those that missed their early purchase.
So glad I got the game early to get Piranha Plant free
@Optimusultimus Check your spam or Promotions folder, that's where mine was
@Optimusultimus @Abaeron @sleepinglion This is what is confusing to me. I never got a code either. I bought physically and all I had to do was claim my Gold Coins by hitting the + button on my controller while highlighting the Smash Bros game on my Home screen and going to the My Nintendo button and click Claim. Then all I had to do was update my Switch to Firmware 7.0 and then download the update for Smash Bros and voila, when I started the game next I got a notification that Piranha Plant "Has Joined The Battle." No code to enter at all.
@Abaeron You need a code either way. If you purchased digital, you're automatically emailed the code. If you purchased physical, you're emailed the code once you redeem your gold points.
$60 for a game engine, 74 characters, 100 stages, tons of music
$5 for 1 character
yeah sure, why not
I've been playing as him for a few days and... he's interesting. I think I need to spend a bit more time to really master it's quirks, though I'm already seeing some people pull off some pretty neat strategies with him.
@Optimusultimus still waiting for mine too. I've found on their website saying it can take up to 10 days after to get your code. And the code is valid until the end of June.
The plant has pretty powerful specials but her normals are lacking and she has a ton of endlag on her aerials...
i had to call nintendo about how i never received my DLC code. they fixed the issue and sent me the DLC code in less than 20 minutes after i got off of the phone with them. and it was only a 15 minute phone call, including the time i was on hold waiting for a customer support representative.
@rjejr said that with season pass ha. Same logic - 5 for $25 - 75 and box cart and all music stages and game $60...
Lol
Must be sad to need to buy it today, the day after it was given for free.
@memoryman3 not a she, at least if you are basing it off the cutscene in which case the she referred to viridi
I jumped through the hoops and didn’t get a code. My email I registered on my Nintendo with is no longer accessible to me. Yeah my fault I know but the only way to change my linked email address was have an email delivered to my address I couldn’t access - no other way to change it. So Nintendo’s archaic online infrastructure has cost me a fiver.
Got both registered for free plant.
Well, given PP's unique mechanics, it makes sense for... her, I guess... to be priced as much as any other character. However, the fact Nintendo specifically refused to add "her" to the Fighters Pass does add some meat to the common idea of all fighters included in the Pass being third-party ones. We'll have to wait and see. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait and see.
£4.50!? Glad I got it for free!
Remember the days when you bought a video game and everything was in it from the start ......? Bloody amiibos, dlc, season pass etc (middle-aged grumble)
@fusermarucs it's like they took the plus parts of finished, complete (though admittedly sometimes buggy) console games and extra added content and whole new worlds, missions and sub sequels of PC games and somehow made a monster.
A giant, money eating monster ☹
@MarinaKat the other will cost 6$
But yeah, a bit high
Glad I pre ordered! I love the game and PP is a great bonus
@AlexSora89 the reason it wasn’t included in the fighter pass is the fact that it was a pre order bonus
If it was included in the fighter pass, it would take a spot, why would I pay 25 dollars for 4 characters when someone who didn’t got the bonus pay the same amount for 5 characters?
Doesn't seem worth the price for me, but at least it was a bonus for early adopters
@Abaeron
No even digital purchases got a code in their email. But you should still be able to use that code to redeeem him for free. Physical purchases had to register their cart for the Nintendo Gold points on their system then they got the email. If they didn't register their cart yet they are the ones having to pay $4.99
$5 is not worth it.
@fusermarucs i also remember donkey kong 64 costing $70 in the store at launch, which is $103 adjusted for inflation. I paid $45 for smash~
Man, good thing PP probably lives in acidic soil... what happened to all the Sakurai worship?
@Tantani
If the Plant was in the fighters pass, the pass would merely cost 30 instead of 25. Simple logic.
That, and the fact the Plant doesn't come with either music or stages.
@JackEatsSparrows
The Sakurai worship, or lack thereof as it stands, has always been a rollercoaster. For every DLC fighter we see, there's gonna be fans crying "thank you, Daddy Sakurai" and others saying "but we wanted that other character, talk about a wasted slot!". And I admit my faults - I sometimes end up in the latter camp.
It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario, really: the base game, content-packed as it is, is still sold for a 70-something price tag; and as much of a minority as they are, there might be people who decided to "vote with their wallets" even before DLC was taken into account, despite the unprecedented - barring Melee, which still "had it easy" considering its own predecessor - scenario of no cut veterans.
Now take into account the fact the fighters pass is going to be sold without its contents being even known to the audience and the aforementioned "damned if you do, damned if you don't" thing gets taken up a few notches. On one hand, Sakurai bluntly said "buy this if you're confident in its value"; on the other, the people "confident" - myself included, mea culpa - have the right to show a few signs of worry (that is, within the realm of reasonability) over the characters included being, well, worth the price of admission.
Take me for example. I wanted to give Sakurai all my support and trust by purchasing the Fighters Pass before any fighter was available (although, by sheer coincidence due to my paycheck not being ready yet at the time I bought Ultimate, only after Joker had been revealed), but at the same time I do have some preferences for the remaining four characters, and can - and most likely will, if it happens - be mildly disappointment if none of them makes the cut, especially given the no-cuts nature of Ultimate has already been heavily implied to be a one-shot deal.
The only thing I feel "safe" about in the whole Fighters Pass ordeal is the illusion of getting all fighters for free, given the gap between payment and release of each character. It's not saying much, but as a placebo of sorts, it works for me. That said, especially given the unprecedentedly high sales Smash (deservedly so) got, if the rumor of a second Fighter Pass ends up being true, not only I will support Sakurai's team again over it, but I'll also lack the same worries I am expressing right now.
I guess "at later date' meant the next day ..... Cool
I was thinking like the week after
@Stocksy The game also has all those stickers and World of Light, which my son recently finished, took him 60 hours just to play through the story. That alone is probably worth $60.
At least w/ the Season Pass you get stages and supposedly some music. Still seems excessively priced, but at least you get new stages to play on and music to listen to while you play. $2.99 for the character I think is a little more reasonable in the grand scheme of things.
And they''ll be making $15.99 per amiibo just by putting him in the game. I still think the $16 amiibo should unlock the character in game. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I don’t use Gmail. Wonder if that has anything to do with why I had no trouble getting my code (digital version). Anyway, sorry to those who had a hard time. :/ I had to help a friend when they couldn’t find their code.
I couldn't figure out the email thing.
I didn't buy the game to claim this for free. Even if I'm very fond of this addition to the roster.
I don't like being strong-armed in such a way.
If Pirahna Plant is included with the full fighter pass, I'll get him eventually. If he's not, I might skip on the game entirely until I'm in less of a sour mood about the whole thing.
So, what's the price in euro, we have to guess now?
@stevenw45 Yeah, Nintendo of America support is great and insanely fast too. Nintendo of Europe support however is pretty bad in my experience. Weeks of waiting on e-mail replies and such. I don't get it..
I pre-ordered the game digitally. I claimed my gold points. I bought the character pack pass pasta thing. I even did a survey to collect platinum points. I MAY have gotten an email way back in the beginning of December, but it's not in my email account anywhere. If I had somehow managed to delete it, I'm only able to check deleted messages as far back as December 15th (which is 9 days after release). Contacting Nintendo has so far yielded nothing. I really do NOT want to pay $5 (or probably the equivalent of $8 here in greedy/cheap Japan) for something I was promised for free. BARF.
[edit] NO WAIT!!! UN-BARF! I finally figured how to recover deleted emails and I found the one with my code, which was apparently sent on November 9th. So to anyone else who should have received a code but didn't... perhaps you accidentally erased it a really long time ago? Ahhh, I feel better now.
@stevenw45 I did not recieve my code untill yesterday, but I did not contact support to get it. I wonder if they got a bit mixed up?
