Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn unravels onto 3DS today and Nintendo has shared a launch trailer to celebrate. You can check it out for yourself above.
This 3DS rerelease's Ravel Abilities, new mini-games, and optional harder difficulty make this a very solid purchase indeed; we praised its focused gameplay design, creativity, and strong art direction in our review earlier this week, going on to say that this is the best way to experience the game and absolutely worth it for those who missed out on the original Kirby’s Epic Yarn on Wii.
Of course, Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn is also interesting in that it could well be the final major 3DS game released by Nintendo. This is purely speculation on our part, we should point out, but with zero games officially on the horizon from the Japanese giant, we wouldn't bet against this being the console's final hoorah, despite Nintendo's supposed commitment to it going forward.
In fact, there are only two games scheduled to launch on the system going forward at all, unless more get revealed soon. Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth is set to launch this June, and Shovel Knight: King of Cards is expected to arrive at some point this year, although this was recently delayed.

Perhaps it will be Nintendo's own last hurrah for 3DS, but my personal last hurrah with 3DS with be Shovel Knight: King of Cards that I've waited forever for.
Probably will be, they don't release many games on there anymore.
@Elithal Persona Q2 isn't made by Nintendo?
@link3710 No idea what you're talking about! I had no such comment.
@Elithal it was there before.
@Elithal Pfffft okay, sure sure.
I almost want Nintendo to announce some new first-party games out of spite as I would love for the 3DS to continue, but it had a good run. Will pick this up in time.
People said that Luigi's Mansion was the last big 3DS release. Just stop trying to kill the 3DS, please.
Nintendo aren't going to definitively say that this is their final 3DS title, because doing so actually put that final nail in the coffin.
A nail that will hurt any future 3DS releases by other developers or publishers.
Persona Q2 will be the last 3DS game for me, and the only new 3DS game I'll have bought since Samus Returns
I genuinly hope we get 1 last 3DS announcement that's a sequal to an exclusive that everyone loved. Me? I want a Super Mario 3D Land 2, so the console ends where it started.
Man, I'm so bummed that I didn't hop aboard the 3DS train until late 2016. I missed out on a lot of good time with this bad boy. The 3DS is definitely one of, if not my most favorite, Nintendo console of all time!
Just confirmed that they have copies at my local EB. I will be heading there at lunch.
I think it is too early in the year to declare that Nintendo is done with 3DS. Over the past couple of years they have tended to announce new 3DS games within 3-4 months of their launch (or even less). There may yet be something planned for the holiday season. If not then I will not cry. It has been a great run for the 3DS that has already gone much longer than I would have expected.
@MysticGengar But then I would want Wario 3D Land - Super Mario 3D² Land.
Jokes aside, I am a bit disappointment that Wario Land series has still not got a sequel. I was hoping for one on 3DS, but I will settle for one on Switch at this point.
It would be even better if they re-re-release (see what I did there) Luigi's Mansion and Kirby's Epic Yarn for the Switch. Actually, I'd just love for them to release some updated Wii titles (Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Super Sluggers and more). Would be some nice additions to fill gaps in between games, and give nintendo more sales...as well as putting better retail games on the Switch (seriously, nintendo's own is about the best on the system...most of them, not all!!!). Guess I'm just waiting for a console-version of Mario Golf, a new Mario Baseball, Wario Land title and a bring-back of Battalion Wars. There's another one that I'd like to see return, but I highly doubt it will ever...there seems to be no love for Chibi Robo.
Wasn't Kirby also the Wii's last Nintendo game? In one of the regions I think.
I think on the Nintendo front the amount of games was excellent. I still wished Sega had made a better effort for Sonic, we only got a clunky version of Generations and a horribly tedious version of Lost World.
It's a shame they couldn't just get the Sonic Rush engine working on the 3DS, it would have made Generations SO much better to play, and at a smooth framerate too.
I still need to try Project X Zone before they shut off the eShop.
If I'm not mistaken, as far as the 3DS is concerned, Shovel Knight: King of Cards is only being released as free DLC for Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
The Nintendo 3DS's 8th anniversary is later this month. If Nintendo doesn't announce any new games before then, it should be safe to call it quits. I fully expect this to be the last game for the system, but only Nintendo knows the real answer. I still remember the last game for each of the 3 previous systems (Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 for DS, Kirby's Dream Collection for Wii, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Wii U)
EDIT: apparently I didn't remember...
@AlienX Kirby and Pokemon are notorious for releasing very late in a system's life
Isn’t Shakedown Hawaii still coming?
Nintendo's final major 3ds release.... WITH A QUESTION MARK
Bad misleading journalism, something you would expect from the tabloids.
@ALinkttPresent King of Cards is coming to 3DS. The Shovel Knight Showdown DLC is not.
@brandonbwii Yep, that's what I thought!
It's had a good run. I just wonder is this it now for Nintendo's dedicated handheld line? Will the Switch successor keep the handheld hybrid feature running, and if not will they revert back to the two system release strategy or decide they can't support two systems once more?
I won’t get this right away, but I will eventually. Really fun game on Wii. After playing games on the Switch for so long it’s gonna feel a little strange going back to the 3DS. That’s all right though, an I do feel this will be my last purchase on 3DS.
Waiting for my copy to arrive.
My next purchase is Persona Q2, it'll probably be the final game i'll be buying for my 3DS unless they announce something good for the system.
I think i pretty much got everything i wanted for my 3DS but i still only halfway through my backlog. It'll probably take me a few years to play everything...
I'm planning to get this. It runs at 60 fps, and while I really wish it had 3d, it still looks good without it. And it's fun!
It would nice if they finally let the 3DS retire after this, this game would have been better off on the Switch, I might have actually bought it then.
@Crono1973 Nobody said that. We knew about Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn before Luigi’s Mansion was released. At this point in time there are zero scheduled first-party 3DS games. That has never happened before on any Nintendo console until support was pulled. Nintendo had nothing to say in the most recent Direct, either. Sales are tanking on the hardware and software fronts, even in Japan, where 3DS sales have been historically strong. Perhaps there will be one more low-effort port to push the 3DS for one last holiday season, but at this point it makes zero fiscal sense for Nintendo to keep pumping out 3DS titles. The public just doesn’t care anymore, and they can make leagues more money with Switch.
@thesilverbrick @TheLightSpirit Are we really pretending that people haven't been calling for Nintendo to kill the 3DS to focus on the Switch?
Dammit Nintendo when on earth are you going to re-release thousand year door?
Please make it happen, preferably on switch than 3DS...
@Crono1973 I love my 3DS and I still play it nearly every day. It just makes no sense to keep throwing support at a system that isn’t selling anymore.
@thesilverbrick Makes no sense to who? You love your 3DS and Nintendo seems to think it makes sense to support it so who does it make no sense to?
Got my copy from GAME this lunch time. Probably be ages until I finally open it and play it, but still happy to have it.
As for killing the 3DS off; if it still generates Nintendo money, why would/should they kill it off?
When it's not worth their time and effort to support it, then I'd say it's worth selling off their stock and calling it a day.
But I think they could just reduce the models they have to a final reduction price to simplify it (and perhaps just officially offer the 2DS, New 2DS XL and New 3DS XL) , and live off the sales of those and the MASSIVE 3DS (and DS) library that already exists, without even creating/releasing any more games for it.
Man, if only I actually liked Epic yarn...
I love my 3ds and i hate that it twilight is coming. I have a backlog of games myself that will keep me busy. This kirby is not my favorite but i still think it shoulda have a switch copy as well.
I rang in the 2019 knowing this was probably the 3ds final year. My last purchase was yokai watch 3. I too felt the direct not having a 3ds game was alarming. I see the signs that the 3ds is ending. The games i normally play on my 3ds have move on-mario, zelda, professor layton, etrian odyssey, fire emblem, dragon quest, pokemon. Most of these drew me into the 3ds. So i will hold on to hope that 1-3 games will be unveil later this year. But if not i will say you have a good run 3ds, you won't be forgotten. I still will play ya cuz i got games to play lol.
@Crono1973 Makes sense to Nintendo. New 3DS games are posting miserable sales numbers and the system slides further and further down the charts every week.
@thesilverbrick Ah I see, so you are just trying to help Nintendo make better business decisions?
@RupeeClock I mean they did say BotW was the final first party Wii U game so they could say that (whether the final one is Kirby or not).
@Crono1973 Clearly not. I’m posting my thoughts on a comments section of a website. No need to take them personally.
Looking forward to the eventual Nintendo 3DS Classic Edition.
I still need to give the demo a spin.
Nintendo should say that the switch won't be getting SNES-games, then release a Super Nintendo Mega Ultimate Collection for the 3DS, sega-style. That way they could boost the sales of the dying console. And only after milking it give us the SNES online-app for the switch and get double the sales.
Jokes aside, I think the 3DS really could co-exist by getting virtual console games.
@BezBot
Nintendo still want to sell 3DS games and systems though.
Wii U, probably not so much.
I downloaded the demo, but I'm not having much fun with it.
You can't kill the guys in the devilish mode?
I just hate it when people hate on the 3DS just because the Switch is new. Reasons why 3DS is better than Switch: More portable, great games, 3D, I could go on. Go ahead and @ me.
I think the 3DS can and should continue. I prefer it over Switch for dungeon crawlers and other obscure RPGs. Also, how easy would it be for Nintendo to bring the newly announced Links’s Awakening to 3ds too?
I might check Kirby out when discounted...
@Trajan If you're talking about the demons, you have to throw something at them.
At this point in time, I don't think it's worth it for Nintendo to make a new original game (not port) instead for say, the Switch. But there's still games like Sega collection 3 which got released in Japan but not in the US. If they want, they still have lots of games from the Snes that they could release on Virtual Console. But guess, their focus is now on the Switch.
Kirby as good as it is gameplay wise, lost some of the charm in the port to the 3DS. The yarn look is muted by the low resolution.
Picked my pre-order up at my local Best Buy I love the 3ds I don't play it as much since getting the Switch but still enjoy it. Pick up Sushi Striker if you haven't yet and see how the game was designed to play dual screen the Switch version was garbage the 3ds version is lots of fun.
@TheLightSpirit I think you replied to the wrong person. I was talking about Thousand Year Door...
I pre-ordered the collector's edition of Persona Q2 from Atlas.
It's very likely that Nintendo will release a few more 3DS games for the holidays... OR they might just re-release more Nintendo Selects and call it a day.
Regardless, I'm sure a few more notable 3rd-party games are coming this year and probably in 2020 as well.
Hard to believe this game came out 2 console generations ago. Time flies
Still bummed that the 3DS didn't get a proper 3D Mario game. Daxter on PSP was way better than what we got.
I still play 3ds more than anything else. It has a gaming line up like no other system although Switch is starting to catch up and catching up fast. I still dont consider my switch a handheld system. I do prefer the Clamshell design myself. I hope they go to a clamshell design with Switch at some point , with the ability to just Cast your game to the tv screen.. im passing on Kirby but will get Q2. Im also hoping that they will deside to port Dragon Quest but its just about all over. Not for me as my backlog on 3ds is huge. I have at least 8 games still in shrinkwrap.
