Update: The game has apparently now reappeared for digital purchase on the Wii U eShop. So, if you haven't played Pikmin 3 before, this means you still have the option to buy and experience the game in its non-Deluxe, vanilla (and much cheaper) form on the hardware it was originally designed for.
Here at Nintendo Life, that's what we like to call A Very Good Thing™. Thanks to Dogorilla for the tip!
Original Story (Thu 6th Aug, 2020 01:55 BST): It's official: Pikmin 3 Deluxe is arriving on the Nintendo Switch this October and will come packed with all of the DLC and even some brand new side story content featuring Olimar and Louie.
What does this mean for the future of Pikmin 3 on the Wii U, though? While we wouldn't normally be asking a question like this - as discovered by Nintendo Everything, the original version of this game has now been delisted from this particular eShop (this includes the removal of the DLC as well). Yep, it's gone!
On the Nintendo website, the Wii U game page for Pikmin 3 is there, but there's no longer a way to purchase the game. If you own a physical copy of this title, you can obviously still play it on your Wii U and if you've already bought a digital copy from the system's eShop, you shouldn't have any problems downloading the game.
Nintendo has pulled this same move in the past with games like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - ahead of 'Deluxe' re-releases on Switch (although in saying this, DKC:TF has since returned to the Wii U eShop - at least in Europe - and is available for purchase). Pikmin 3 on Wii U was priced at $19.99 and the Deluxe version is valued at $59.99 on Nintendo's hybrid system.
Did you manage to grab a digital copy of Pikmin 3 for Wii U before it was pulled? Could this just be a temporary removal? How do you feel about Nintendo taking down games while the Wii U eShop is still up and running? Share your thoughts below.

drat I shoulda snagged it on the console it was made for..
Scummy business practice from Nintendo. Tripling the price while seemingly not adding enough content that would apparently dissuade customers from buying the Wii U version. I mean, let’s be honest, what were they afraid of?
$59.99??? Better have a BUNCH of extra content packed in.
And people say that Sony was being the most anti-consumer with Spider-Man only on the PlayStation versions of The Avengers Game
It's absolutely disgraceful the way that Nintendo is treating the 37 people who still have their Wii U hooked up.
If you believe the deluxe version is really worth $60 there is absolutely no reason to do this. Shame.
That is dirty! Nintendo could team up with EA to teach others bad market practices.
@JimmySpades This is probably the most honest take out of all of this lmfao!!!
Good job Nintendo. The people who are paying attention won’t like this. Good on you guys for taking advantage of the people who don’t know better. I hope this blows up in their faces somehow
Reminds me of when Steam removed Dark Souls: PTDE when they announced their Remastered version. There was room for both, no reason not to give people that preferred PTDE their choice.
This really does seem like a pointless move. The vast majority of potential customers for Deluxe never had a Wii U anyhow, and it wasn't exactly likely that those who did would choose NOW to download the original version. No way the good outweighs the bad PR here.
I don't have enough data to make a call on this one. Even if the base game were $19.99, you've got the DLC, additional content, Switch Q&A testing, artistic asset rights, physical copy production, etc. For a game that will likely sell fewer-than-usual copies anyway, I think there are enough factors here that make this price somewhat reasonable on the face of it.
@JimmySpades i still have my Wii U hooked up... but i also have the physical copy of this game already so I'm good!
The thing that stings about this most is that now you can't buy the DLC content for the Wii U version if you hadn't already purchased it before now. Its completely inaccessible now.
Hyrule Warriors was ported to Switch, yet it's still available to purchase on the Wii U. New Super Mario Bros U + Luigi U was ported to the Switch, and yet it's available on the Wii U for purchase. Is it because those games are still priced at 60 dollars?
I'm not mad or anything, and I don't see it as a big deal, I just find it a bit confusing. The ones that are full priced they'll keep on the E-Shop, while ones that aren't the same price, they'll delist? There are physical copies still out there which I bet aren't 60 dollars. I don't see the point of doing this, unless I'm missing something? I don't want to jump the gun here.
So it is a F*CKING cash crab screw nintendo.
@nessisonett That's just a big red flag saying nintendo not to sure in the game.
This also means that the Pikmin 3 demo is no longer up, either. A shame, because this announcement would've gotten me to try it.
I'm annoyed, to say the least.
I picked up the digital version on Wii U several months ago, but I hadn't really got around to playing it yet, and so I had NO IDEA it had any DLC available.
I didn't find out it had DLC till TODAY... After I can no longer buy the DLC. To say that I'm rather pissed off is an understatement.
I seem to remember this happening to DKC:TF before it reappeared back on the Wii U eShop. Perhaps the reactions are a little pre-mature.
The only people this screws over are die hard Nintendo fans who still play their Wii U (like me). This is poor form Nintendo.
@Darknyht I sure hope so, because I want the DLC, and I don't want to have to pay $60 bucks for that privilege.
Eh kinda stinks but ill just grab the switch version. I'll go physical anyway.
@Darknyht Actually, I just checked the Wii U eShop.
DKC:TF is still not available digitally.
@TG16_IS_BAE I can't tell if you missed the irony in my tone or not.
@nessisonett Not including a discount in one market that appears in another market does not qualify as raising the price.
Anyone that had an interest in the game over the last 7 years has likely already purchased it. Anyone complaining about not being able to purchase it now after all this time likely doesn't have a Wii U, which they'd have to buy the system itself to get the "cheapest" Pikmin 3 version....
But.... People who have a WiiU and never bought this game now can't buy a game at a lower price because it's been out for ages! I'm calling Congress, this is an outrage.
That's you, internet.thats what you sound like.
@Snatcher There's no such thing as a cash grab in an industry whose products are purely discretionary.
Already have a physical copy that hasn’t been played in years 🤣
Look, I'm not upset that the game was removed, per sé.
I'm upset that the DLC was removed.
The Wii U version is now permanently and forever gimped compared to the Switch version, and I get that's the point, but it still sucks a**.
@Discostew I looked it up on eBay earlier because I was curious. A Wii U is going for about $180, Pikmin for $20-$25. That's $200 to play the game on that system, for those making honest comparisons. Throw in now being on a system that people are willing to spend money on, and there is no argument that it should be $20 apart from gamer entitlement.
It's no big deal.
I mean, if you didn't bought Pikmin 3 ok Wii U in all this years, I'm pretty sure you weren't going to buy it now 🤷🏼♂️
And even if you wanted to, you can buy it physically for the same price as digital...
That’s scummy. I wasn’t planning to get deluxe but definitely won’t be getting it now
@JimmySpades $20 is too low, but $60 is way too much for a 7 year old game.
$40 is a happy medium.
Scummy move. I feel sorry for the person impacted by this.
I'm chuffed to bits Pikmin is coming to Switch but this has left a bitter taste in the mouth (and I'm not talking about the cartridges.) Sure, Wii U was a flop but that's not the point. Makes sense to put the game on Switch, but why aggravate Wii U owners. No need. Just seems unnecessarily harsh. I can understand the $60 price tag, but this not so much.
@nessisonett idk if I would say scummy, but I am not sure why they would bother. Or if it even matters. Would delisting this compel WiiU owners to run out and get a Switch now?
The bad PR from Nintendo fans who own a Wii U was obviously worth it vs the sales number difference profit on Switch by keeping it on the Wii U eshop.
@JimmySpades $180 for a WiiU... I'm assuming that that comes with some really damn good games bundled in... That's crazy, but yeah... Ok, that's eBay for you.
Anyways, I completely agree with your stance on this Topic. It's an old game on a dead system. Even at a $60 price tag, Pikmin 3 will sell significantly more on the Switch.
It's not scummy at all, imo, it's Business. If you don't like it then don't buy the game... It's no worse than the people here that won't buy a game, until it goes on Sale (that doesn't make you a shady scummy consumer, does it?)
This is scummy and no other way around it
@JimmySpades I think you accidentally put a 7 after the 3. No big deal accidents happen 😂
@Leej07 https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/05/donkey_kong_country_tropical_freeze_disappears_from_the_north_american_wii_u_eshop
Then someone needs to update a story then.
If you are defending this, why? It benefits no one, and only reflects badly on Nintendo (who could really use some good PR right now).
Wait, is the DLC still available for purchase? If not that sucks because I wanted to buy it to complete the collection for the Wii U release.
as long as i can still download the game and the DLC content (if needed) from the Wii U eShop, than i am okay with the purchase option being removed. however, they should have waited a while before taking Pikmin 3 down from the eShop; maybe a few weeks or even shortly after the Pikmin 3 Deluxe web site is finished. the web site currently says: "full site coming soon".
Seriously, who still wants Pikmin 3 (a game that has been available for seven whole years) for Wii U (a long dead console with a minuscule install base) and hasn’t already bought it? I doubt a single one of the people complaining in this thread falls into that category, and even if they do, the game is still available at a discount in physical form in various places (even the digital version is still purchasable on Amazon as a code for $20).
Granted, it’s trashy that Nintendo took it down, but I have doubts a single real world person will actually be affected by this.
Never played it. Never owned a Wii U; which has benefited me while owning a Switch with the ports that have come. However, this game does not look like anything I would be willing to pay $60 for.
Can Nintendo really be running out of game ideas?? I don’t mind the ports but their output lately leaves a bit to be desired! Also greedy move delisting P3 on the U to make way for the Switch version. Boo!! Hiss!!
@stevenw45 @Tourtus As of now, the DLC is completely inaccessible, which is, quite frankly, unacceptable.
I get delisting the game, but why delist the DLC?
It's scummy. There is now no way to ever have the complete experience on the Wii U, so yeah, completionists beware.
@fiben1002 As someone who never fully played it (just the demo), I'd say it's worth the asking price, in my opinion.
@thesilverbrick I owned a Wii U. I never bought P3
I snagged Pikmin 3 during the Mario Kart 8 promo, and.....I was underwhelmed. I loved the first two, but I couldn't get into 3. For those who loved it, and have been begging for a port, I'm happy you're finally getting it. Also, I'm happy that Nintendo has one more game that they'll have ready for the holidays. I'm stoked to see what they plan on revealing next.
The people we should really be mad at is all the ones that skipped this game. You didn’t buy, you didn’t play it, now cough up the $60. Maybe if y’all would’ve supported the game and system when it released we would be getting Pikmin 4 instead of a port. You had plenty of time to go on your Wii U and download the game if you didn’t, then you missed out.
I personally liked this game, so I’ll gladly cough up $60 to have in on my switch. If you haven’t played the game, then you shouldn’t be complaining about the $60 price tag. I paid it then, u should pay it now.
I find this really unnecessary. How many possible sales is it gonna sabotage for Switch?? Hardly any. My god, just let Wii U owners have the option to buy it there if they want it. It’s not like there were many out there anyway.
@JimmySpades I got it and I loved it, don't worry!
@noswitchbutidc And if you still want it on Wii U (and I have doubts you do, if you haven’t bought it already and you say you “owned” a Wii U, in the past tense) there are still ways to get it on Wii U, both digital and physical. My point is that this is a non-problem and people are just complaining for the sake of complaining.
@JimmySpades making things cost more money is raising the price. You can do a simple test... 19.99 - 59.99
See. The price is raised by 40 dollars.
That's kind of a ***** move. You can still redownload these games if you already bought them, right?
@JimmySpades I just bought Mario 64 on it today, after recently playing the DS version again and still hating the bad camera and controls there; so I still wanted to play the game, but the right way.
I really hope the Mario 64 remake rumor is true, because there’s a lot of awesome additions to the DS version (Characters, Stages and minigames) but the controls make it such an overall annoying experience.
Lol for 60€ its stays right there in the eshop.
Ita not worth full price with nothing extra.
Wow, Nintendo have turned into such a scumbag company these last few years.
@thesilverbrick My brother had Pikmin 3 and enjoyed it. We shared a Wii U console when we were younger. Recently I got my own console and had planned to get a few of my own copies of games we had shared; Pikmin 3 being one of them. Yes, I can get it physically, but I can no longer buy the DLC. So no, it's not a non-issue. You'd have to be a ridiculous fanboy to defend Nintendo for this.
@joey302 They’ve been highly affected by the Covid closures, it’s pretty obvious they HAD things on track to reveal but it all went to hell
Yeah this is low of them. It better not affect redownloading Pikmin 3
ridiculously scummy, no way the added DLC in deluxe would make up for the $40 you'd save on just buying the wii u version
@RainbowGazelle I’m not defending Nintendo. I said it was a trashy move. I’m just saying that there is practically nobody who will be realistically affected by this decision, and those who are outraged are overreacting. Nintendo taking it down was a stupid move, since there aren’t many (honestly I doubt any) people who would’ve bought the game on Wii U at this point, and removing it just makes Nintendo look awful.
That’s a bummer about the DLC, though. I’m surprised even the link within game to the eShop doesn’t work anymore (and I just tested it myself).
@UltraLaserTen Is this really true? Have you checked today? I have the digital copy. It's on my backlog list. I always figured they'd at least leave the DLC accessible to those who own the game.
Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and now Pikmin... I am not interested in any of these games. I wouldn't care but seeing as Nintendo is releasing games one at a time, with a couple of months gap, it feels like I have never been so bored with Nintendo.
@dcstud Just tried it. The DLC menu links to the eShop and you’re suddenly told that “no information exists for this title” or something along those lines.
@thesilverbrick Thank you. That does stink.
@dcstud Only now do I realize that I never bought the final batch of DLC levels, haha. Oh well. How badly could I have wanted it if I haven’t bought it by now?
What a scummy move. Now all those people with a Wii U...
Oh wait...
I have my digital copy, but I sold my Wii U. Maybe someday I'll buy another one and redownload... But it's a pretty low move for Nintendo: People should have the option to buy in the previous system, since it exist.
Where is Pikmin 4?
Pikmin 4 were anounced in year 2014.
6 years later we get a cheap P3 Wii U port, but overpriced?
I'm glad i own P3 physically on Wii U, and all DLC.
Since i bought near all exclusives on Wii U, it feels like Deja Vu owning Switch.
I won't buy any future Nintendo console for exclusives. They will mostly be ports from Switch/Wii U anyway.
Sony and Nintendo hitted rock bottom this gen. (Must be a Japanese thing)
Microsoft is the only ones doing mostly good nowadays.
I'm just super pissed about the DLC because I don't want to have to pay $60 for the "Complete" experience.
I should want to pay $60 for a game because I liked it so much I decided to double dip.
Not be forced to because the original DLC is now completely impossible to purchase.
This is about as anti-consumer in my opinion as Sony not allowing PS4 controllers to work with PS5 games.
@nessisonett 2 b fair, isn't, $20 only the Nintendo select price?
@Ventilator BAGAHHAHAHAHAGAGAGAGAGVAGAGAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
@Ventilator I might be fed up of all the ports and feel quite underwhelmed by the Switch but yeah, nope, bad take. Microsoft this gen have been an absolute calamity from start to finish outside Game Pass.
Dirty move dirty move
@nessisonett They have done alot more than just the Game Pass.
Just compare the console firmware alone vs the barebone one on PS4. Also. Xbox One supports 48.TB in USB.. 3 x 16.TB, and PS4 only 1 x 8.GB. Can't even copy from HDD to HDD on it.
Microsoft made special Gamepads for gamers, and also handicap ones.
Then the phone apps where you can install, and also uninstall games on phone no matter where you are in the world.
Also. Microsoft bought several legendary developers, and have big new titles like Grounded, Battletoads and Flight Simulator this month. Phil Spencer turned everything around after the Mittnick mess.
@JimmySpades 38.
I'll pick this game up for Christmas. I really hope that we get Super Mario 3D World Deluxe soon. I miss that game. I had all of the good Wii U games and I ended up selling Wii U. Poorly made console and an underwhelming one. Awful controller that reminded me of a Fisher Price toy. Netflix was slow and glitchy, actually froze on me once. The exciting part of gaming on the Gamepad instead of on the Tv even wasn't fully realized cause most games used the Pad as a menu. Combined with the fact that the Gamepad had to be near the console anyway. Watching Netflix on the console was a pain cause of the annoying double screen effect from the Gamepad. Nintendo Switch is what the Wii U should have been. I have like 70+ games for Switch and it is my favorite console of all time now. I look forward to Pikmen 3 as a Christmas gift to myself for the tree.
@Ventilator I have a 1TB hard drive connected to my PS4 that I can copy files to and from the internal hard drive. That’s just plain nonsense.
The lengths people here go to defend Nintendo never cease to surprise me.
Take my $ again. Going to enjoy it again and again. Love 2p Bingo Battle. Only downside is that Pikmin 4 won't be released anytime soon. Fall 2021 hopefully.
@nessisonett Wrong. When i swapped 2.TB USB HDD to 4.TB on PS4, i had to re-download everything as there is no way to copy from USB to USB.
Xbox One, Wii U and Xbox 360 is the only consoles supporting USB to USB Copy. Thats a fact.
Xbox One supports 4 HDD's at the same time, including hot swap on 3 of them. (Try hot swap any HDD on PS4. Console will instantly crash.
I have 11.TB of space on my Xbox One X.
@thesilverbrick
That very few people will be affected doesn't make an action OK. That is very flawed moral reasoning. You say that it's 'trashy' but state that people are overreacting. The 'outrage' someone feels should reflect the immorality of the action, not whether they were personally affected. I shan't detail the ugly political implications for such thinking here.
Personally, I don't think it's that bad, just a daft move for very little gain.
But digital only is the future and physical should not exist anymore, right?
Coming from a midnight release Wii U purchaser here, if you are EXPECTING the great gameplay that Pikmin 1 & 2 had, you will be disappointed...
I beat the first two at least 5 times each. And have emulated them through the years multiple times.
It's not that 3rd is a "bad" game? It's just not the best... The ending is lame, and it took me a few weeks of losing interest and force myself to complete it...
I never replayed it. And I paid 60 for it.
I'm not saying pass on it? Because the included two player sounds fun, especially with my girlfriend...but we just sold our Switch a month ago due to the stagnation of first party games and I have absolutely ZERO interest in purchasing another because of this.
Bored? Sure, grab it. But realistically it is a EASY pass. You're not missing much.
Cheers
I got this game for free via that Mario Kart 8 promotion they did, when it first came out on Wii U. My son STILL plays the Wii U version to this day, YEARS later... I almost feel obliged to buy it on Switch, considering the joy we have got out of something we got for free! Wonderful game.
This happened when Tropical Freeze was released on the Switch as well, didn't it?
On reflection I may only purchase Pikmin 3 when prices go down. Will do the same with Wonderful 101. That's mainly because I played them before already (& irrespective of this issue tbh).
They're good games but not worth double dipping at their current price points for me (unlike Tropical Freeze). Sure there's portability, but still...
@thesilverbrick I've sold my Wii U forever ago
Nintendo have pretty much sucked the whole of this year, though the year is not over yet, in house studios have produced next to nothing.
It’s funny at the release of the switch and for a while they begged for our love and money and produced games etc.
No they have 60 million in sales, they produce nothing and treat Wii u gamers like this. I have almost left the Nintendo gaming scene now as the Switch gathers dust.
@nessisonett buy it on eBay if you care that much
If you want to pay 60$ for the game that's fine, and if you don't care that Nintendo has removed the game from WIi U, that' fine again, BUT DO NOT TRY TO JUSTIFY. If you do that you promote yourself from Nintendo's fanboys to Nintendo's slaves,
Well they haven't managed to remove my physical Wii U copy from my cupboard.... 😀
Bad move, and for what - twenty more Wii U sales than Switch sales?
Nintendo's original antics...they never learn!
Nintendo ia hitting Rock Bottom this Year !!
what a filthy move by Nintendo
If you wanted the Wii U version, you should of got it by now, come on, it's only been out for 7 YEARS
Sorry but dont understand peoples outrage at this, they are a company, who needs to MAKE MONEY to carry on.
Didnt see this amount of rage when Donkey Kong came out.
Hardly suprising that a business opts for the more profitable option. On the other hand if you haven't bought Pikmin 3 after 7 years then you probably don't want it. You can always but a cheap physical copy at half the price and forgo the risk of the Wii U eshop shutting down.
The Wii U eshop could be taken down tbh it's been 3 years or so since the end of the console which only sold 13.5 million. So people should start buying vc and games cause one day axe will come.
It's not the greatest practice removing pikmin but they dont have to support wii u at all anymore and it seems unlikely everyone complaining was just about to buy it on a dead underperforming console (after years of resisting it).
That's kind of scummy on their part, but it isn't the end of the world
Dirty move by Nintendo.
Nintendo make a lot of crappy moves sometimes and this is right up there, the only reason they've removed it is so that people can't compare the prices to see how massively inflated the Switch version is, as are ALL of the Wii U ports which make up a large part of its library
A nasty move, if you ask me. It's like they don't even want the few Wii U lovers to continue using it.
Anyway, although the Deluxe edition is a properly good port (well, that is if the reviews are good and it's not another case of "this thing worked better on the GamePad", which makes me prefer Wii U versions, i.e. The Wonderful 101) this time, and they haven't just thrown in an extra character for the easy level (remember, that's what they did with Tropical Freeze), 60 bucks. Really? C'mon.
@Bunkerneath,
Eh, people where also this upset when they did this with Donkey Kong. But maybe even more so now since Nintendo is completely failing this year (minus Animal crossing and Paper Mario. But I don't like Animal crossing, and many people hate nowadays Paper Mario's).
The comments here are a joke just like Nintendo's reasoning.
It seems as though Nintendo are falling from grace.
No longer the seemingly caring company it once was. 🤑
@Leej07 You should have bought it years ago as the DLC weren't pricey.
I'm not sure how I feel about this.
On the one hand, you can't buy Wii U consoles as new any more. You'll only buy them second hand now, and if that's the case you can buy a second hand physical copy if you really want to play it, can't you?
On the other hand, what's the harm in keeping it on the Wii U eShop. Sure, you might be getting 0 sales on this right now, but this revival on Switch may actually make those that have stuck with the Wii U buy a game and there's no harm in making a couple of extra sales that go straight into your pocket even if it's an old platform, surely?
Eventually they'll shut down the Wii U eShop anyway won't they? Might as well have as much choice to be able to make as much money as you possibly can until that day. Just seems counter productive.
@Moroboshi876
First party games are always full price because they sell millions of copies at that price and it's important to protect the premium pricing of the brand. Prices only reduce when sales are lower than expected. A lower price for the sake of it makes no business sense.
@zool
Lol. Nintendo has never been a caring company. They are a huge corporate money making machine whose goal is to maximise returns for shareholders.
If you wanted Pikmin 3 on your Wii U, You'd have it by now. Stop moaning
@cheesedude No, I get it. From a business standpoint of course. But it shouldn't be that way. Many third-party ports come at a reduced price. I'm not talking about 30, but maybe 40-45 tops. Not in Nintendo's case, I know.
Of course it will sell well, and I'm sure there will be people who paid full price for the Wii U version and will double dip for 60 bucks more, and digital on top of that. Nintendo knows they will, hence the price.
@Moroboshi876
Exactly. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Nintendo games sell like the expensive hot cakes that they are and so the premium pricing model continues until sales are not as expected.
The poor souls who had 7 years to buy the game for a console very few people owned...
scratches head why would you remove the original from the Wii U shop? Even if they charge 39.99 for Pikmin 3 deluxe for Switch it doesn't change the fact it was an old Wii U game that got discounts from it's launch. So I really don't understand removing it. Donkey Kong TF is still available, as is W101, Bayo 1+2, Mario. Do they plan on updating the Wii U version too?
In Europe you actually cant buy Wii U games directly off the eshop with a bank card anymore for the last year. You need to add funds either like I do via the switch or go get an eshop credit gift card.
Something to do with they turned off the functionality rather than spend money upgrading it to meet new regulations
So I'm expecting the wii u shop will soon be dropped like wii one.
@JimmySpades made me laugh. But the CoD player base alone for Wii U is still above 37, and Blops2 is nearly 8 years old. I admire the humour though. My Wii U has been played alot more than Switch this lockdown, didn't even bother renewing family Pass online for myself, nephew and brother because we game more on other systems than Switch. Ironically I still have a backlog on Wii U, including finishing my digital copy of Pikmin 3.
@__jamiie and people that can't afford the newest console so they are a generation behind.
@LEGEND_MARIOID it looks like it is a temporary removal. Pikmin 3 is still in the selects banner on the front-page but not available in the category. Would people really confuse a Wii U game with a Switch game?
Personally, since sales of that pikmin 3 on wiiU would be like 12 or something, i think it's more Nintendo trying to prevent people from buying the wrong version now pre orders are up.. comercially it doesn' t really make sense otherwise.. anyone with a wiiU who knew about pikmin 3 will have bought it...
Still, i got my wiiU still hooked up (mainly for wiifit U) , so might be the right time to give pikmin 3 a spin... Not sure I will double dip, pikmin 3 never made me so wonderfully happy as 2 did...
@JimmySpades you know, I just became the 38th last night....
Ill have to re-download it before the eshop closes completely. If you already own it digitally you can still download it I am pretty sure.
It's Nintendo's loss, really. There will likely be other, unofficial, ways to get the DLC and the game for free for the people who really want the original Wii U version.
Lol what kind of a move is that? You just Nintendon't do that. Sometimes these guys disappoint me.
I dont even care about pikmin and I still think them removing the wii u version was a greedy selfish thing to do, just so they can be lazy and release another boring port of a game
Still on wii-u because people are cheap, and wait for that non profit bargain. Well good for you.
You should have bought the game at a fair price, now the game is only an obstacle for the new entry.
If you still want the game, i would search as fast as you can for a secondhand or new fysical copy, before you pay twice like pikmin 2 on gamecube.
Its just a tip.
From experience for doing it with Tropical Freeze (I played it after DKCR when I was burning my backlog), it was $60 on Switch, but Walmart had the digital code for $18 on Wii U so I followed the savings.
Digital codes still work and will be around for a bit.
Here's Walmart and Amazon links for digital codes for $20 for the Wii U version of Pikmin 3. I already own it but for those still wanting it...
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pikmin-3-Nintendo-WIIU-Digital-Download-0004549666004/56225225

@cheesedude of course, but they could still be a huge corporate money making machine whose goal is to maximise returns for shareholders, and STILL give us a few more game and a Switch pro 😁
A lot of people whining about a game they weren't even buying on Wii U.
What are $60? Around 2 days of work? Really?
I understand from people who live in poor countries where $60 is a week long earning, or two weeks', but come on, $60 is nothing. And a game is a luxury, if you don't want to buy it, none is forcing you.
Stop acting like Nintendo games, and videogames in general, are commonly needed items, like toilet paper or food.
@Tendogamerxxx Mario Kart 8 and New Super Mario Bros. U were relatively popular (for Wii U) and still don't have sequels either. Mario Maker, Splatoon and Smash do though. If Nintendo doesn't want to make a sequel they simply won't.
A nice anti-consumer move by Nintendo. While I own the disc and enjoyed it, the DLC was one of the few Wii U items left on my to-buy list.
I can't believe they felt compelled to even remove the DLC. You can only access it to buy it from in-game. So anyone able to buy it already owns Pikmin 3 on the Wii U.
If they're that scared that someone might buy a $20 Wii U download instead of a $60 Switch download, I'm willing to let Nintendo satisfy their irrational fear. But also removing the DLC is a step too far.
It’s probably a temporary removal. There must be some strange programming thing on the back end that we don’t understand that makes it better for them to temporarily remove a Wii U version as soon as the Switch version is available for prepurchase
@Ventilator Don't you dare mess with me, dude.
I only bought a Wii U for the first time last year, and I only bought Pikmin 3 a few months ago, but I never got around to playing it.
I only learned it even HAD DLC yesterday.
So don't come at me with a "you shoulda bought it years ago, hardy-har-har."
I didn't even HAVE a Wii U years ago.
Now that my dream of a Switch trilogy pack has been broken (I should have known better), here's what I probably do: Wait till the Wii u version returns at the e-shop. Download it, download the dlc and Pikmin 1 and 2. Or I'll take the retail version, download the dlc and Pikmin 1 and 2. Either way, I have to wait till its back on the e-shop. Otherwise you can't get the dlc.
I don't feel like buying it on Switch. Not only because of the ridiculous price (and the new stuff probably won't warrant the price), but also because they should stop doing this bs. New games please!!
That is scummy. I was going to buy the $20 version with the same resolution and almost the same content but now I’m being forced to buy the $60 version.
@Leej07
it makes sense to delist the DLCs since they are delisting the game that they are associated with. objectively its a good move since they don't want their customers to ""accidentally" purchase the DLCs without owning the game. unfortunately they made this decision way too early.
the new Pikmin site is not even up and running yet. so hopefully they will find a way to make up for this mistake of theirs. a.k.a. re-releasing the first two Pikmin games as free DLCs. for all we know Pikmin 3 deluxe supports the damned Wii Remotes along side the Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers. however, a system update will be needed.
and there is a way to purchase the DLC content for the game. you can get it from Nintendo through My Nintendo. the pages for redeeming them are still available.for viewing. and a while ago i found an issue in the My Nintendo web site that allows you to redeem some of the expired offers.
since Nintendo does a bad job with taking down content from their web site, a lot of their old web pages are still up and running. however, you need to know the links for accessing them.
the Mario Party 4 web site is still active. a while ago i downloaded a copy of the site so that i can make some changes to it. the web site contains a demo version of the game in which can be played over zoom with your friends once the game has been setup properly.
FUUUUDGE!! I own the physical copy for Wii U but i never got around to buying the DLC... I hope they bring it back again like they did with Tropical Freeze.
@stevenw45 I found the My Nintendo page for the DLC, but I didn't see how to redeem for it.
@Leej07 Do at least get the Nintendo 4 x Panorama 360 videos on eShop unless those are removed too. There is a free trial of it. Wii U exclusive Google Street is taken offline, so pointless to get that.
There is also some official Pikmin HD movies on Wii U Shop.
As for games. You have to get these for Wii U.
Anyways. I bought Wii U at launch in 2012 and never regretted it.
It had more new exclusives than Switch ever had.
@MaxBanditop You can emulate on PC instead then with Cemu.
@Ventilator Hey man, I'll take a look at those.
Sorry I came across as snippy in my previous reply. I'd got a few other people saying I'd had chances to get DLC before, and I was feeling a bit annoyed at the time.
But yeah, I've been really enjoying the Wii U. Very good purchase, and it's a pretty great system, which is why it sucks so much that it failed as badly as it did.
@Leej07 No problem. You still have the main game. It were later updated to support Stylus too.
As you already have seen, Wii U have a better menu system, Folder, Game statistics and other things missing on Switch.
Space is no problem on Wii U as you can connect a cheap 500.GB, 1.TB etc. 3.5" External HDD on Wii U and store games there too.
Do not use 2.5" as USB power is a bit too weak, but 3.5" have external power.
External HDD needs to be powered on before you power on Wii U.
Wii U is a wonderful console with loads of great games.
You will also notice that Touch pad on Wii U is far better utilized than the Touch screen on Switch.
If i don't remember wrong, you can backup savegames to SD Card too.
Many of the best things on Wii U sadly never carried over to Switch.
I don't know how I missed the DLC. I'm normally all over that stuff. $6 for 12 levels seems like a good deal. Oh well. If I do purchase the Switch version I'll make sure to purchase a used copy so Nintendo doesn't give any more. They made a billion dollars this quarter and they can't toss us guys who supported them through a failed console a bone? Maybe I'll just start making all my Nintendo software purchases used.
I am SO ANGRY with Nintendo. I'm one of the few that actually bought a Wii U and my entire Wii U collection is currently on my back log. I still have Pikmin sealed and it sucks to know that I can't get the campaign DLC now. I literally told someone yesterday that I needed to break out my Wii U this weekend and start downloading the DLC for my Wii U games. If it was online only DLC I wouldn't care but it just burns me up to know that it was story DLC and now it's just gone while the eShop is still up and running.
I will NOT be double dipping and buying this on switch. NO THANK YOU.
@Liam_Doolan Just saying, Tropical Freeze is still not available on the Wii U in North America. The idea that it was put back on the eShop was misreported back then, and has been copied ever since.
@JimmySpades As one of the 37 people I find this outrageous!
@Chibi_Manny Tropical Freeze was never brought back. It was removed from the NA eShop, and still is to this day. However, it was never removed from the European eShop.
Thanks @Octane, I've updated the article to reflect this.
Nintendo has oft been a fan customer first company. backwards compatibility with Gameboy and ds and 3ds and gamecube, wii, and wii u. Wii U's optional VC upgrade pricing (gamepad support and button remapping support added). Promotions with older games often involved, animal crossing nes games on gamecube, metroid game unlockable in gc. Free games nes and gba to customers who bought 3ds early and afterwards they decided to cut the price. It's weird to see Nintendo being so anti-fan base at the moment. Maybe the Switch success has gone to it's head... VC held hostage to online subscription with no option to buy. No recognition of previous fan based purchases on wii u or upgrade path. No backwards compatibility with wii u pro controllers on switch. This is definitely not the nintendo I knew previously. A little sad really. Still some nice and fun games. But as a company not the same love for their long time customers. This will probably hurt them in the long run; but for the time being they won't recognize it due to the short run gains.
This is not going down well in my house.

Looks like the person who wanted to buy Pikmin 3 on Wii U over the last month can now rejoice.
@robjbrad
You and your son should be pleased to hear that the game is available for purchase on the Wii U eShop again then.
Guess this is good news for the 8 people upset they didn't buy it at 20 bucks for the last 6 years.
look, this flat out sucks if you had a wii u and all these games. there is no getting around that. you were sold a bill of goods that promised to be a gaming wonderland by virtue of the nintendo name, and just wasn't that. It's really a dream come true for myself and millions of switch owners, but i really can't find a way to defend how nintendo left those consumers in the dust, even if that base is small.
Should not have been removed in the first place. I must admit, I did look to see if the same had happened to 3D World, but when I checked it appeared to still be there.
It was a stupid anti consumer move by Nintendo and they fixed that now. Problem solved. Hope a few people that got hyped by Pikmin 3 on Switch that don't own a Switch but a WiiU can now enjoy the game.
Good to see Nintendo listening to Arlo
Is it still the same price? Can you still get the dlc? I am thinking of downloading the Wii u version and the dlc. Or I'll buy the retail-version on the cheap and download the dlc. Some dlc can be obtained with Mynintendo coins.
Very bad antics from Nintendo, as usual. Luckily its fixed.
@mrmememan Shoot I think that makes Sony more consumer friendly to their own install base. Shoot forking over a ton of money so people that play their systems have a benefit. Sure it screws over everyone else but I don't think they care about fans of other consoles.
Trying to make everyone forget about the Mario 3D All Stars timed purchase issue. At least we are warned when it will disappear. The dropping of this didn't give anyone a chance to pick it up. How many people who were moaning will pick it up now?
@Ventilator I got Tekken for £7 on Wii U. Bargain! The game plays like a dream.
@westman98 they probably already own it. They just wanted an excuse to cry and act even more hard done by, even though it got put back up again.
Who said complaining on the internet doesn't ever change things. I'm glad there was a mini uproar and more happy that Nintendo reversed their poor decision.
Thanks nintendo now just keep mario 35 forever.
Having gone over the comments, some of the entitlement and irrational feelings in these comments is a bit unreal.
Great move!!
Removing the game it’s a big mistake.
Checked European store there for all the wii u ports. Pikmins returned and the only one now missing appears to be Bayonetta 2.
@RupeeClock
Cheers!
How exciting more old games.
@Roibeard64 Bayo 2 vanished 5 years to the day after release, not when the port came out, presumably when the music license for Moon River expired. It's definitely not coming back.
Too bad they didn't put the DLC back on. That's what I need to finish the game. I never understood why they pulled in the first place. The Wii U failed hard. If people that payed $350 for that system (only for Nintendo to send it to an early death) want that version over the Switch version they should have that choice. Those few people can't really affect the total sales of the switch version.
Now they need to bring Tropical Freeze back.
@cleveland124 I totally agree with you. Is the DLC still truly gone? That's what I wanted to buy, I already have the game on disc...
I guess now all the folks that were outraged at this will not care... That's how that usually works.
@KryptoniteKrunch whether people care enough to buy the games is besides the point. Nintendo was being petty removing the game to begin with.
@WiltonRoots Yes, very good version. I own it physical on Wii U. The game also have some Nintendo modes not in other versions.
For some reason the past couple weeks when I visit the Game Store on Nintendo's website they only list 66 games total for Wii U. It's like they're trying to sweep the Wii U under the rug.
" So, if you haven't played Pikmin 3 before, this means you still have the option to buy and experience the game in its non-Deluxe, vanilla (and much cheaper) form on the hardware it was originally designed for."
Lol, as if enough people own a Wii U to care (or notice). But, hey, take any chance to have a shot at the Switch. Right?
@Tourtus Hopefully he just didn't realize that the DLC is bought in-game and not directly from the eShop.
If not, the relisting means little for me since I own it physically and just wanted the expansions.
The demo's still gone which is unfortunate
This is a power move by Nintendo.
“Ok so you wanted to buy it on WiiU? Well then, go ahead. Do it.”
I feel there is a simple answer people are overlooking in exchange of conspiracies. There was maybe a licence issue with maybe the software used to develop it. They updated the licence for Wii U and bam back on! Probably similar to The Last Remnant on PC except Square Enix was like... nope not coming back.
The thing is companies don't have to continuously provide goods on an online store just like how they don't have to produce physical versions forever. That is why movie studios re-release older movies on different formats over the years, from VHS, to Laserdisc, to DVD and Bluray etc to keep more popular and timeless films in circulation (your God Fathers, Silence of the Lambs, StarWars, Rocky etc). Game companies have gotten in that habit too, but the thing is due to complicated licencing as such like homegrown development engines and tools get shoved aside for 3rd party software when that licence expires so does the game from digital storefronts as they can no longer legally sell those games. Or the cost of keeping open an online storefront gets too costly to keep the servers up so companies shut them down and the games as just lost. There are hundreds if not thousands of films lost between VHS to DVD and I'm sure between VHS/DVD to Bluray... But, this is the future we are heading in as we can see even the almighty Netflix doesn't always renew deals to keep movies and TV shows on their service forever. Welcome to the digital age boys and girls! This is our future.
Luckily for now Pikman 3 is still on the Wii U eShop. But that service won't stay up forever so this is more a stay of execution than anything.
Can't imagine a lot of people would buy it for Wii U at this point due to how old the console is. Physical version is less than half the price of the upcoming deluxe version (without the DLC I guess).
I managed to get the DLC this afternoon, which made me very happy indeed.
A lot of you guys are forgetting that there are people like myself that only bought a Wii U in the last year or so to explore its back catalogue and the last hurrah of the now-defunct Virtual Console at a far cheaper price than the $60 dollar remakes on Switch.
This just bought some goodwill back from me. I'm buying the DLC today.
Good; that was a shady move on their part. Now if we can cause a big enough fuss to get the Metroid Prime trilogy on Switch, that would be great.
Glad it's back. Taking a game down with no warning is just a move, and a self-sabotaging one at that.
Like they were trying to avoid getting money.
Good to see it’s back. For gods sake just let Wii U owners have it.
@wazlon I only upgraded to a Switch last year, and my Wii U still sees regular use by my kids. While I already own Pikmin 3, I have looked at picking up some other games that run $20 on the eShop there. They don't care that it isn't a current gen gaming console, or that even the newest games don't come out on it. I imagine I am not the only person that is in a similar situation.
I tend to have the opposite problem you are describing to be honest. I sometimes struggle to find games to purchase on the Switch because I own (or have played) a lot of the Nintendo (and third party) releases on Wii U (or other consoles) already, and they have yet to justify another $60 with the additions they have put on the re-releases.
@Leej07 - Well sure, there's always someone using old hardware long after it's been discontinued (heck, there's probably a couple of people still using the Game Boy Micro out there somewhere) the question isn't "Is there anyone still buying Wii U's?", it's "How many are still buying Wii U's?" and the answer is probably pretty low, hence the (now retracted) removal of a title in favour of a newer version on current hardware.
@judaspete - What money exactly? We're talking about a game on the Wii U here, a console that wasn't that popular even back when it was relevant, let alone now, with a far-more popular successor on the market. While removing a game is usually a bad move, in this case, the likelihood of anyone buying a Wii U in 2020 (because, really, anyone who already has a Wii U probably either already has the game, or isn't interested) is pretty small, and certainly low enough to justify removing the title in favour of a new and improved version.
Personally, I didn't see the problem myself (although a notice probably wouldn't have gone wrong), for reasons I've mentioned above, but now it's back *shrugs * I guess it's bit moot. (That said, I am a bit surprised to see the USD price for the Wii U version at $20 (down from I imigine $50-60) given the AU price here for the same version is $50 (down from $70-80). I know we Aussies usually have to pay more, but even factoring in the exchange rate, that's almost double the price for the same item)
Good to see it's back on the WiiU eShop. Had absolutely no interest in that game in the past 7 years, but now that it's gone and back again, I somehow want it.
Let's see how many of those crying bloody murder will actually now buy it, or buy the DLC. The cynic in me says very few.
@Darknyht I'm like you, still have my Wii U and enjoy playing it. When I stop and think about it there's not a great deal of fresh games I can call to mind on Switch that aren't ports. Even Breath of the Wild is technically a Wii U port and Mario Tennis Aces is a fixed version of Ultra Smash. So far the only game I double dipped for is MK8 Deluxe.
I think a lot of Switch owners never owned a Wii U which is why there will be more people buying Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Others might have sold their Wii U by now but there's still people like us who go back to it which is great because it means we don't get ripped off.
Good job the kids don't notice, the Wii U version of Pikmin 3 is probably going to be the best version. Like with New Super Mario Bros. "deluxe", some of the Gamepad features were removed on Switch.
@wazlon
Especially since the touchscreen control update, it is amazing on Wii U.
@wazlon As you can tell from my icon I think the Wii U was one of the best consoles Nintendo put together, but it will always live under a dark shadow caused by poor marketing and timing. I am glad that more people will get to experience the great games that Wii U had, but I do wish that more people had experienced them on the original console.
@FullMetalWesker Generally, if you tell people ahead of time before removing a product, sales go up. Many who were on the fence would decide to purchase knowing it was their last chance. I just did this with the PC version of Forza Horizon 3.
