Another major publisher has confirmed that it will be making an appearance at this year's E3, as Square Enix joins the ever-growing roster.
The news comes from an interview with Japanese publication Nikkei, where the company's CEO, Yosuke Matsuda, has revealed that announcements will be shared at this year's event. Here's what Matsuda had to say (translation via Siliconera):
"Outriders, which was delayed has released on April 1, 2021. And NieR Replicant will release this month as well. Final Fantasy VII Intergrade will release in June.
We have several other games lined up, which we plan to announce at E3 2021 in June, so please look forward to these announcements."
Just last week, Ubisoft also confirmed that it will host a 'Ubisoft Forward' showcase on E3 2021's first day, and companies like Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, Konami and more were all confirmed a while ago. If you need to catch up, feel free to bookmark our handy guide to all things E3 2021 which will be updated over the coming months as we get closer to the event.
It's been a busy few days for Square Enix; towards the end of last week, a report suggested that the the Final Fantasy publisher had several interested buyers, but the company was quick to quash the claims in an official statement.

FInal fantasy remaster part 2 please.
Would love an FF7 Remake PC port.
FF7 Remake Part 2 would be nice to see. Honestly just to see if they’re really going to deviate and turn it into the Rise of Skywalker catastrophe they were teasing at the end of the first one.
I have the original FF7 on my switch, I dont need anything else from Squeeeeenix
Except if there is a physical collection of the FF games, now that I would be up for
How is this relevant to Nintendo? This should be on Pure Xbox, we all know Final Fantasy and other franchises are best on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S
Ofc nothing new for NS
And of course, you had to headerpic this article with Final Fantasy XIII among other things.
@CheapCheepBeach well we might get more information on Project Triangle Strategy and other Square Enix games that were already announced for switch
I'd be really happy to see FFVIIR come to Switch! But, honestly I'll just be satisfied for FFVIIR for PC and more information on FFXVI! And as far as pipe dreams go? Give me a new Chrono game!
@Wexter I doubt FF7 remake will come to switch. I don’t think the switch is powerful enough to run at an acceptable level.
Maybe as cloud version, we will see...
Not particularly interested in anything SE has announced except Project Triangle. Maybe we will get to hear about some new games instead of the rehash of 7s or remasters.
Also please no more failed live service pedaling.
I hope they finally show more to FF16
@CheapCheepBeach the games that are usually timed exclusive to playstation devices and sometimes fully exclusive to playstation devices are best played on the console that doesn’t even have all entries?
Balan Wonderworld 2
@nessisonett
I'm 90% sure they're not gonna change the core story. The silly KH ending was just a way of creating uncertainty going forward, so there would be more tension and curiosity about what happens.
I hope that at E3 Square Enix: 1) give more details of Project Triangle Strategy; 2) announce ports of some classic games for Switch, such as Final Fantasy IV, V and VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Chrono Trigger and/or Dragon Quest IV, V and VI.
Hopefully they announced Dragon Quest XII exclusively for Switch. The Switch is killing in Japan right now, it would be a waste to ignore it.
New info on Project Triangle Strategy please. And hopefully a comment I made a few weeks ago comes true!
“So, with SaGa and Legend of Mana coming to the switch, which older franchises of Square Enix (tactical, action, strategy or turn-based rpg’s) are we missing that they might revamp next?
I’d say:
Any that I missed?
Also, don’t sit on the franchises Deus Ex, Life is Strange, Nier, Kingdom Hearts and Tomb Raider, Square Enix! Bring m all over please. And new games within these franchises are also always welcome.“
Just to get my wishlist out of the way since I don't like to actually do that during events. Here's hoping to a remake/port of DQ IX.
Otherwise I just want more info on Triangle Strategy. Very much anticipating that game.
I know it isn't going to happen but I really want the Kingdom hearts collection to come to Nintendo Switch! I don't expect Kingdom Hearts 3, but all of the others are easily possible, and a couple of them I haven't even played yet!
I'll buy dragon quest 5 and 8, final fantasy 3 to 6, the XIII trilogy, tactics and tactics advance 1&2 switch ports IN A HEARTBEAT
A Dragon Quest XII reveal would be amazing.
I hope for more news for Triangle Strategy, the demo was amazing.
Glad to see more about NEO: The World Ends With You, Poject Triangle, and Dragon Quest Adventures of Dai! And hopefully something new, of course.
I wish there was a new Mana game in process (I know they're bringing Legend of Mana, I mean something like Trials of Mana remake, I really enjoyed that game). Also, let's hope they announce Dragon Quest XII, and that it's coming to Switch. I loved DQXI, it's one of the best JRPGs I've ever played.
All I want is Nier: Automata on the Switch. That game is perfect for portability.
@anoyonmus if Witcher 3 can come to Switch FFVIIR could because it's built on UE4 so a lot of the porting process is done right there because if built in tools to help with the process. But, it be highly unlikely just a that would be nice moment! I doubt we'll see it on a Nintendo platform till the Switch successor though.
If I remember correctly Square was looking into bringing FFXV to Switch but because of how unstable Luminous was as an engine they'd had to port the game to UE4 and decided it was not worth it. So it is possible.
@Friendly
Threads of Fate, maybe? It's more of an action-platformer, but it has a hub town and an RPG-like narrative, so it would be in good company amongst the other Square Enix properties.
@Friendly Just happy you mentioned Deus Ex and Tomb Raider Those games deserve a new potential audience on Switch
@nessisonett I have no idea what they were smoking with that ending. It honestly kind of made me angry once that boss fight began.
DQ XII and Project Triangle please!
@Primarina I'd totally be down for any if any if 13 games on Switch. They always seemed like very pretty and fun games to me, even if I'm sure the story is complicated and odd (like most Final Fantasy games).
Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy Remastered for Switch, PS, and Xbox. That wasn't a joke, btw, I sincerely want it, if only to add it to my collection.
I'm already sold on Neo The World Ends With You, but hope it shows up at their E3 to give the series a bit more exposure. Anything Star Ocean related would be awesome too, especially if its also Switch related
@Friendly A Lufia collection would be amazing. I still maintain that Lufia II is the best RPG on the SNES. Chrono Trigger is a pretty close second for me, and then the Final Fantasy series was a distant third. So, I would buy a Lufia collection day one, but I don't know how much control SE would have over the franchise as they were just one of several publishers. Natsume was the developer I believe.
@nessisonett Aww that sucks that you didn't like the ending. I, for one, loved it and appreciated the
massive scope they were going for.
Don't worry guys, all of them are gonna be Sony exclusives.
FF1 to FF6 for Switch. Please and thank you, S-E.
This will be slim pickings at best. Not much meat for Switch owners. If there is a reveal, then I can just watch it on a news site. Might be an update on Project Triangle for us. Would love some FF6 or Chron Trigger news (yeah right) and an updated Bushido Blade. Other than that, happy to be surprised - but won't be dissapointed if I'm not.
Just give nier automata for switch...
My dream would be a Chrono Trigger remake or a sequel after Chrono Cross
I would only want one thing from Square Enix: Tomb Raider collection for the Switch.
No way they'll talk about it at E3, but I'm eager to learn what they're having Forever Entertainment work on. Still hoping it's remakes of the Gaia trilogy.
Always love watching squares events. This, capcom and nintendo always get my attention at E3.
I just want Nier Automata on Switch
Just to echo what other people have already said but I would be interested to see some more of Project Triangle and maybe Nier automata or Replicant coming to switch. Also I hope there will be some more info on ff7 remake part 2.
I just really want some sort of dragon quest announcement whether it's a remake or a port, or maybe even an announcement of dq12.
I just need more dragon quest
@Wexter
Switch uses a graphics card from 2015-2016. The Witcher 3 came out in 2015. I am pretty sure the switch could even run the game with some changes ofc and I was surprised not because it couldn't run on switch but the fact an acclaimed RPG is coming.
As for DOOM, I am pretty sure id Tech can be a bit scaled down for lower end systems.
FF7 also is a space consuming game... no way that the switch could fit it unless if it is a cloud version
@Bizaster they will be talking about Project Triangle Strategy I think as well
I'm just gonna wait for Square Enix to do more awesome things to their Taito IPs. Bubble Bobble isn't the only one though.
i hope that they reveal that they have more planned for Balan Company
(i doubt it, but still hope for it)
@anoyonmus UE4 is also very scalable. FFVIIR is running on UE4 rather than Square Enix's inhouse Luminous Engine (which is why we never got an FFXV port despite interest from Square Enix initially and the cost to port the game from Luminous to UE4 was why they never went through with it). And while FFVIIR is a very graphically intensive game the environments are not all that large in comparison to the Witcher III and more in line with Doom and Doom Eternal. So, as stated it is possible to port FFVIIR to Switch it would just require Square Enix to compress the textures and remove a fair amount of the particle effects. I don't see how it cannot be ported due to it being on UE4 and not even an earlier modified version like KH3.
If it is an issue with not being able to fit the game on a 60GB cart (which is fair considering the size of the game) they could go the digital only route like Doom Eternal. But, even then I'm not crossing my fingers because this is Square Enix and I'd think they'd rather save an FFVIIR port for a Switch successor to "wow" potential buyers and the future proof future Part ports.
@Wexter who knows but I doubt it
Looking forward to the rumours about them announcing their KKR buyout at E3.
@anoyonmus Same. I'm more in the camp of this would make me happy... but... I more expect Y rather than X.
Cloud version.
Lol.
Dragon Quest Builders 3, please.
Can't wait for them to not release a second part and instead remake the remake for ps6.
Today we announce the announcement of an announcement. Please look forward to the announcements announcement
@Primarina fingers crossed for the entirety of Switch's lifespan. And for what it's worth, Virtuos did seem to tease some news for this summer...
