When he's not making huge games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, video game director Masahiro Sakurai is actually playing them. Yes, as you've likely already seen before, he's got an extensive collection of consoles and games (new and old).
In a new post on social media, it seems Sakurai has updated his gaming space. As you can see, all the consoles are neatly ordered - with the Switch on the second shelf, and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on top. One thing a lot of his fans also noticed is that the Switch dock is placed on its side.
We're not too sure about the close proximity of the PlayStation and Xbox, either - but to be fair he's running an open roof at the very top. Here's a rough translation of what he had to say about his new setup, courtesy of Google translate:
"I had a made-to-order game machine shelf made. For waste heat, the top plate and the back are removed.When playing, the door is left open. The wiring is passed straight through the hole in the center behind the shelf board. The bottom 2 rows are for controllers and such. The power supply on the back can be turned off individually."
Update: Sakurai has shared a few other images, noting how he got two of these shelves. And in addition to this, another tweet discusses the Switch on its side. He says it's not recommended by the manufacturer. Here's exactly what he had to say:
"There are two of these game shelves...For living room and private room (work room). This door is opaque."
"There was a reaction to the Switch dock horizontal placement ...It's not recommended by the manufacturer, so do it at your own risk. This is just my personal experience, but I had no problems using it until I cleared Xenoblade Chronicles 3."
In recent months, Sakurai has also shown off his personal game library - featuring all sorts of retro titles:
What do you think of Sakurai's new setup? How about the sideways Switch dock? Leave a comment below.

Just curious, is it okay for the Switch to lie in the dock like that? I quite like Sakurai-San's setup, neat and tidy
Where is his MSX or Marty Towns FM? I'm sure he also has a 3DO and Sharp 86800.
The older consoles are in great nick, almost looking brand new, I’d say he is very much a minimalist, a very tidy chap, very much like I am now with my consoles and games, I just wish I was when I was younger
Sweet setup a great collection i need to. Fix my game collection better
I see his NES, SNES, WiiU and SWITCH, but where is GameCube and Wii??
(Guess WiiU can double up as a Wii, but doesn’t explain lack of GameCube)
Where’s the spot for the Virtual Boy? Don’t hate on it just cuz it wasn’t a Smash, bro.
Was also hoping Wii’d discover the Vitality Sensor alive & well in his controller/peripheral drawer.
… Wun can only hope.
@Picton123 probably plays GameCube and Wii using his Xbox and an emulator.
Doesn't look easy on the eyes nor very practical to me but if he feels fine with it I guess that's what counts.
Interesting he's got the USA SNES front and centre. He most definitely has a JP SFC somewhere too I'm sure of it.
Or perhaps it might be a USA SNES that's had the plastic bits in the cartridge slot that block SFC carts torn off, in which case there's no need to use the JP SFC.
@Scarko One of my mates has always done it and when I questioned her, she said "if it wasn't meant to lay down, why do the cables come out the side and not the back". Not sure if that is the reason but I couldn't argue with her logic
I have loads of friends who lay their docks on its back like that. Doesn't really affect anything thermally. Same reason either to fit in a tight shelf or scared to trip the whole thing over (it happens).
Alright internet. Do your thing and figure out every single #### thing he owns! So people can buy it!
very classy set up, not often you see consoles behind glass while still being playable. he did a good job hiding those messy wires too lol
@EarthboundBenjy looks like it’s just a SNES Mini. Guess he likes the US library of games more than the Super Famicom Mini.
@syrupdash Ahh, of course, It's hard to tell scale right away from the photos apparently. Lol thanks.
Theres a shocking lack of gamecube
The furniture should be solid hardwood, and he doesn't have a sim-rig for driving games. Strictly amateur.
This just highlights the ridiculous size of next gen consoles, the PS5 is almost the size as a PC.
@boxyguy - They aren't: "When playing, the door is left open."
I respect the Wii U Pro Controller in there. Honestly one of the most comfortable controllers I've ever used.
That American Super Nintendo... still horrible looking!
Not sure I liked the Japanese NES either, but the slots for your controllers sure made it tidy.
I think his Switch dock is on its side because the new Switch's dock will be this way
I love it when people let us look at their setups. This one looks awesome
Really shows just how enormous the PS5 is O.O
I keep forgetting how massive the series x and ps5 are and I just bought one of each (still in box) sigh may have to rethink my setup. Why does he have a ps4 and a ps5?
Has anyone had any problems with the Switch on its back like that? It would make things so much easier for me to have mine that way.
Not a bad set up. Love the controller drawer.
Preferred his previous setup, where it was all laid out horizontally.
I kind of figured him as a person to own either a Quest 2 or a Rift with a gaming PC. Huh.
@Sinton I have a PC that is smaller than the PS5 or XBOX Series X
@__jamiie It's not recommeded, at least not when in use. Since you would block the air intake of the Switch. Also it makes the screen "rest" on the side of the dock. Which would increase the risk of scratches.
@Picton123 ikr
@Picton123 not sure if he's a pirate, but you can def play gcube backups on a Wii u thru the Wii emu on it
My concern with laying the dock on it's side with the switch plugged in. Would be the weight of the switch possibly weighing down on the charge connector port over time...making it loose or not function right eventually. Becuz the switch clearly sits in the middle and not snug, so there's space it can weigh on and eventually cause problems I'd imagine. Works? Yes...for now...don't hold your breath.
Source:gravity, small connector holding it up essentially.
@sanderev I have a lawnmower that's smaller. 🤣
@Travisemo007 A pirate? what is it 2004?
I was wondering when you guys were gonna report on this
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed its actually normal to have older systems in that condition in that part of the world, we're neat since birth lol
the Switch will overheat but he clearly doesn't care
@Anachronism
Agreed, it is 100 times better than the Switch Pro controller, due the harsh edges, and the weight on the Switch version of it.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed @Elira those older consoles on the bottom shelf are the new mini varieties, not original. You can see the USB ports on the genesis and the SNES controller ports aren’t open (as in couldn’t have an actual controller plugged in). Also the scale is evident when you compare the other consoles to the genesis mini (which is clearly the mini due to the usb controller ports)
@EarthboundBenjy @syrupdash if you look closely you can actually see the SFC mini tucked behind the genesis mini. The fake controller ports are peeking out back there.
I was searching for the speakers, he only use soundbar? Man he's missing so much from not having 5.1 home theatre system. I know most switch games only use stereo channel/speakers, but xbox series can use dolby atmos which is super cool for gaming 😃
@wiiware Kinda weird that Switch doesn't support Dolby. I'm not an audio guy so maybe it's about the weaker hardware. Maybe on the Switch 2
@skeletormodulator Yeah, I hope the next switch support atmos or at least dolby surround as the default.
For the comments about the SNES Mini instead of the Super Famicom Mini, I'm pretty sure I spy the Super Famicom Mini hiding behind the Mega Drive Mini.

@skeletormodulator Lol maybe. I don't think the year really matters XD. Anyone who is one knows very well what I'm talking about lol. I wouldn't peg it to just one year. They be pirates sailing the seas even now lol.
@Remerkin I think I need glass perhaps, normally I’d notice small details
This guy makes us look like casuals!
So why do I strangely love it?
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed I guess it’s a testament to how well the replicated the original consoles 😃
@Ryu_Niiyama it's probably just the old one he has owned since when it came out long before the PS5 was released.
@msvt Yeah, I've gotten used to it now, but I still don't like the shape of the Switch one as much. Though I can live with the extra weight, since that gives you stuff like rumble and gyro aiming. Would be nice to get pressure-sensitive triggers back at some point, too.
@Will808 I know but what I mean is why have them both hooked up since he has a disc ps5. Which plays ps4 games.
@Anachronism
but that D-Pad is a meatgrinder for Street Fighter, etc. for me! Ouch!
@Travisemo007 the USB C port on the dock is slightly smaller than a typical USB C port so it doesn't squeeze in like most USB C connections. There's probably very little strain on it.
Also for heat concerns I'm sure he cut holes in the shelf for anything that needs to get air through it.
What are the white things all his consoles are plugged into? Does he have NA versions of all the consoles, and those are converters to JP plugs?
Wait, does Sakurai use a 3rd party Switch Pro Controller? That surprises me if so.
@NerdyBoutKirby It looks like an official Switch Pro Controller with some sort of silicon cover over it?
Very tidy, nice place however he looks abit bored ask him for another wave of Smash characters.
@__jamiie Iv been using this dock I found on ezee https://www.etsy.com/listing/877452299/nintendo-switch-dock-horizontal-base?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=switch+dock+horizontal&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&sts=1&organic_search_click=1
It is not at the exact same angle that His is at but its still horizontal. Iv had it since the oled model came out and I have no scratches or any problem yet. I play alot of games that make the switch heat up but it feels about the same as before when I grab it.
@Arcata Thanks for this. I might have to get one of these. 👍
@Kolma that's not the issue. The meaer weight of the switch in a laying position on that male connector could mess it up over time would be my concern, regardless of how snug it's connected. If there's any space on that side of the switch/dock and the switch isn't flush with the dock somehow when slotted. I don't have one to look at atm so idk.
@NerdyBoutKirby what game is that in your profile pic?
It looks so amazing!
@Travisemo007 Kirby Mass Attack, with burgers from Kirby: Canvas Curse edited in. The enemy shown there is unused in the final game.
Anyone else notice he’s got the special Smash Bros. Switch dock? Of course he does!
Am I the only one who never realized you could set up a Switch dock like that?
