Topic: Why are some people calling Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door a remaster?

@FishyS I would actually disagree that TTYD isn’t taking a new art style. The original was 2D characters in 3D environments when in the remake it is more of papery characters in a papery yet believable world. It is a lot different of a style if you think about it. The remake is more of a diorama (even a pre order bonus is a diorama) and the original really isn’t.

@Anti-Matter Well, based off of the evidence and Nintendo saying it themselves, it is certainly a remake according to all of the proof provided.
However, I would get the game if it was a port, remaster, or remake, I wouldn’t care because this game is just so good. Port/remaster would’ve been great, but it seems like we got the best outcome, which is a remake.

@PikminMarioKirby From a technical point of view I agree it is very different. From a 'look at two screen shots' point of view they look remarkably similar. Obviously this depends on how much of an eye for artistic subtlety the person has.

I'm not saying it isn't a remake by a reasonable definition, just that it doesn't appear to be a 'reimagining' as described a few posts up.

@FishyS Yeah, I would honestly be very annoyed it if it was a reimagining. The original is so good, it’d be bad if they changed any core aspects.
Nintendo doesn’t really need to reimagine because they made it so great in the first place, I believe they should continue to make faithful remakes

Remake = making a completely new game on the foundations of an old one. New engine, new gameplay/perspective. Everything is NEW. Resident Evil 1(the original one on the GC), 2, 3 and 4, also Final Fantasy 7 are prime examples. More examples - Pokemon Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, HeartGold/SoulSilver.
Remaster = it is the same game. They just add better textures, maybe throw a new DLC in there like Kingdoms of Amalur. Examples of that are Resident Evil HD Remaster (the ones after the GC), Starcraft Remastered, Diablo 2 Remastered.

@jedgamesguy @zockermiller Honestly I don't see Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver on a different level from TTYD

According to your definition,

TTYD isn't a remaster according to your definition, because it is
1. Not the same game
2. Not just better textures, but all things are remade. Better textures is Metroid Prime Remaster, new textures is TTYD.
3. It won't likely have DLC (Downloadable Content), but more likely just new content.

However, TTYD falls more in line with your Remake definition, because
1. It's a completely new game on the foundations of the original
2. New TTYD seems to be running on a new (but faithful) engine
3. The camera seems significantly different from the original, new content will likely give some gameplay changes

TTYD still falls in your definition of remake, but still this definition leaves some games unaccounted for. If it's made from the ground up, how is it not a remake? The definition of remake is 'to make something again'. TTYD is Nintendo and Intelligent Systems making the game again. They're not just polishing the original, but making pretty much a new game out of it. We seem to get a new Paper Mario game every 4 years (about), and this 4-years it seems to be TTYD.

I'm glad TTYD is good enough not to have a bunch of gameplay changes though, even though they may build upon it a bit. The gameplay/story were so good, they didn't have to change it significantly. That's not the view Square Enix and RE developers have, though. Even if the original was good, they alienate those who loved the original by making it so different that it's almost unrecognizable.

Remake being 'a game being made again from the ground up' has always been the definition to my knowledge, but for some reason some people who play Final Fantasy seem confused on the definition. Square just has a different internal definition, which is fine. But that doesn't change the actual definition. Reimaginings barely existed until recently, and remakes have existed long before.

Yes, Final Fantasy is a remake. But that doesn't mean games like HeartGold/SoulSilver and TTYD aren't. Final Fantasy is just a remake that doesn't stay as true to the original, but HeartGold/SoulSilver and TTYD are remakes that stay very true to the original source.

This isn't the main point of your post but I respectfully disagree with this. I love TTYD but I don't feel any need to buy the remake right now because I already have the original. If it had been a complete reimagining that would have been more interesting to me. Now I'm glad they didn't do that, because TTYD is infamously difficult to get hold of in its original form so it's a good thing that it's being made more accessible via a faithful remake. But in general I don't agree that reimaginings are alienating to existing fans; in cases where the original game is readily available on modern platforms, a remake that takes it in a completely different direction doesn't take anything away from the original, and gives fans something genuinely new without feeling like they're spending money on something they've essentially already played.

Here is the thing.
Regardless of being called Remake or Remastered, who cares?
The Switch version is the new version of GameCube version, both of them have their own contents.
And why the debates of being called Remake or Remastered is keep going on and on ?
It's like hearing argument of Remake vs Remastered.

@Dogorilla Actually, this is a fair take. This needed to be faithful and accurate, because most people don’t want to spend $120+ for a used Gamecube game, and now people can get a remade version for like half the price (and, of course, not a used copy)!

This game will likely have some new features (they said that there are new features and additional changes), which could possibly make you more interested in getting this version.
I loved the original too, but I want this version as well because 1.to make it easier to play, and on a handheld device 2. I can choose my controller from more options 3. The new graphics are outstanding 4. The new music tracks are awesome 5. I want to support this game so Paper Mario will hopefully return to how it was 6. Play any potentially new modes/major differences 7. QoL changes will be very nice 8. This game is so good it’s worth adding to my Switch library

@Anti-Matter Not as much of an argument, more of a discussion/friendly debate. At least that’s how I view it lol

I would get the game for full price if it was a simple port, so I don’t care much what it is, but some people are underselling it, so I’m trying to explain my reasoning.
This debate/discussion is pretty much pointless, as I think a lot of us are getting the game whether it be a remaster or remake. I would get it either way, so it doesn’t really affect me that much.

At this point, I don't care what it is...it's TTYD, that's all that matters. Remakes and remasters are so confusing to me now, I even remember some people arguing that Super Mario RPG was a port.
....A port.
...Like, what? lol

@Joeynator3000 Ikr, TTYD is good enough to get no matter what kind of bring-back it is. I believe it’s a remake since Nintendo calls it one and there’s plenty of evidence, but I would’ve bought it if it was a remaster also.

Oh wow, Super Mario RPG being called a port?! Lol. I mean, it does stay faithful to the original, but its completely remade from the ground up from what we know. I mean, this one is 3D…and the other is pretty much 2D on the SNES…
